JACKSONVILLE - George L. Rothermel, 87, of Jacksonville, died Sunday, October 19, 2025 at Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 PM on Thursday, October 23, 2025 at the Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church at MCAS New River Chapel, with Rev. Willaim Waun officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

Mr. Rothermel was born in Randolph, Ohio to the late George Peter Rothermel and Zita Magargee Rothermel. After high school he began serving his country in the United States Marine Corps. He served honorably for 30 years and retired as a MGySgt. He then continued serving as a Civilian Contractor at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point for another 27 years. He was active in the community volunteering as a youth T-Ball coach at MCAS for 30 years and was a founding member of the Southwest High School Century Club. He was also extremely active at his church, Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church, where he served in many capacities and helped organize the Knights of Columbus, Col. Jerry Marvel Chapter.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Rothermel of the home; three children, Ginger Rothermel of Norfolk, VA, Rose Marshburn and her husband, Jody of Jacksonville and George Rothermel and his wife, Jennifer of Charlotte; and three grandchildren, Taylor Rothermel, Haley Marshburn and Lauren Love.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5 – 7 PM at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville Chapel.
