George Silk Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home - Lewisville on Jul. 20, 2023.
George William Silk, "Papaw", age 92 of Decatur and former long-time resident of Valley View and Lewisville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Good Samaritan Society, Denton Village. George was born in Lewisville, Texas to George Franklin Silk and Anna Barfknecht on their family farm. He graduated from Carrollton High School and on January 19, 1950 he married the love of his life, Kitty Ruth Robertson. They had two children, Billy and Barbara, and raised their family in Lewisville. George worked on his dad's dairy farm, Huffines Motors, Bluff View Farms and American Airlines before joining the Lewisville Independent School District in the Facilities Service Department in the early seventies. George was actively involved in the rapid expansion of LISD schools and facilities in the 70s and 80s and was equally active during his entire life as a rancher and cattle trader, spending as much time as he could tending to his properties and cows.
George and Kitty both retired in the early 90s to their farm in Valley View but stayed active in the community and started a registered Angus business (Silk Angus Farms) on their properties in Valley View. They both greatly enjoyed their retirement years, were regular blue grass festival attenders and were both "hooked" on trout fishing in Roaring River, Missouri. They ran the race well and were joyfully reunited on July 15.
George is survived by his children, Billy Silk and wife Nancy, Barbara Berry and husband Scott; his brother-in-law John Shafer and wife Jane; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a large number of Barfknecht and Robertson nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service to celebrate George's life will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, July 24, 2023 at Mulkey Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville, which will include the committal (no graveside service) due to the excessive heat. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 to 12:30 prior to the service at 1:00. The family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the Good Samaritan Society, Denton Village in George's name. Gifts can be made online at good-sam.com/donate.
