George Smart Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dillinger Funeral Home - Newport on Jan. 22, 2026.
George Emmett Smart, 66, of Newark, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026, in Batesville. Born on July 21, 1959, to Eddie Smart and Vernie Lee (Tims) Sims, George was a devoted son, friend, and community member. He spent many years working at Walmart in Newport, where his kindness and dedication touched the lives of countless coworkers and customers. George's gentle humor and reliable presence made him a bright spot in the day for all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by the love of his life, Helen (Arnold) Smart to whom he was married for forty-eight years; his sons, Justin Smart of Sulphur Rock and Joey Smart of Newark; his daughter, Sarah Baker (Cecil) of Cave City; his brother, Dewayne Smart; his sister, Karen Sims of Beebe; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and a lifetime of friends.

He attended Hickory Grove Baptist Church and was a member of the local Masonic lodge, George cherished the fellowship of his church family and brothers in the lodge. His faith guided him throughout his life and shone through in his compassionate actions toward others. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, fix what was broken, or simply offer a listening ear.

George's true joys were found in the simple pleasures: the roar of engines at the drag strip, the satisfaction of repairing and tinkering, and peaceful mornings spent fishing along the riverbank. He was an expert at the grill and delighted in gathering family and friends together for good food and laughter. More than anything, George treasured time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, creating memories that will be cherished for generations.

His legacy is one of warmth, generosity, and a steadfast love for those around him. George will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his generous spirit, love of life, unwavering commitment to family and friends, and the sense of fun and adventure he brought to every day.

Service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 23, 2026, at Dillinger Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 on Thursday, January 22, 2026. Interment will be at Cheshier Cemetery.
