George W. Stevenson, age 100, of Bluefield, Virginia passed away on June 29, 2025 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV. He had been living in Beckley, WV with his daughter for the last 7 weeks. George was born in Lex, WV on September 27, 1924 to Bethel Marion and Sadie Ann Stevenson.
George was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church in Princeton, WV since October 1991. He worked as a coal miner for Semet Solvay at Capels and Tralee, WV and retired from Ranger Fuel in 1986. He was an army veteran who served during World War II in the Philippines and later served in the occupational services in Japan.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Ruth Stevenson; a son, George W. Stevenson Jr.; a granddaughter, Erica Layne Hall; his brothers: Samuel Woodrow Stevenson and Bill Edison Stevenson; his sisters: Thelma Jane Stevenson, Gladys Mae England, Eva Roberts Proper, and Geraldine V. Green; and an unnamed brother and sister (twins).
He is survived by his children: James H. Stevenson (Diana) of Lexington, N.C., Lenora Stevenson of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Debbie Skeens (Mike) of Beckley, WV, Tim Stevenson of Mullens, WV, Sandra Deeb of Bluff City, TN; his daughter-in-law, Cathy Stevenson of Princeton, WV; his grandchildren: Ernie, Anthony, Jami, and Mickey Stevenson, Michelle Quinn, Billy Swope, Susan Young, Chris and Chad Skeens, Billy and Koree Deeb; many great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; and a host of friends and neighbors.
Services will be held at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home, 3431 Coal Heritage Road; Bluefield, WV on Thursday, July 3, 2025 with Pastor Thurman Belcher officiating and Rusty Lambert. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; services start at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial at Grandview Memory Gardens, 38659 Governor G C Peery Hwy; Bluefield, VA. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Bowers Hospice House for their care, compassion, and kindness during this difficult time. We would also like to take this time to thank everyone who visited and sent cards to George during his last days and the ones who made his last birthday (100) so special.
He fought a good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith...
