Robert Raymond Maxwell, Sr, distinguished electrical engineer and retired rocket scientist at Lockheed Martin, passed peacefully on March 11, 2026, in Crumpler, West Virginia, the town where he was born on March 6, 1934. He was a notable figure in the field of electrical engineering, contributing his expertise to many projects that furthered our understanding of rocketry. His career was marked by a commitment to innovation and excellence, reflecting his dedication. In addition to his professional life, Robert served honorably in the United States Army. His military service was a testament to his values of duty and honor, which carried into all aspects of his life.
Robert enjoyed sports and loved all forms of athletics and competitions. One of his greatest passions was playing on his travel softball team and he was an avid basketball player too. He was recognized as an excellent poker player. These interests brought him joy and camaraderie throughout life. Robert is survived by his family, which includes his son, Robert Maxwell, Jr. of Crumpler, West Virginia and his daughter Tami Kay Shaheen of McDonough, New York. He was a proud grandfather of two grandchildren and a great-grandfather to two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Pat Hall and Virginia Nummery, both of whom reside in Crumpler, West Virginia.
Robert was predeceased by his devoted wife, Anna Lee Maxwell, whose memory he cherished, as well as by his parents, George and Alma Maxwell. His best friend, Fairley Hall, held a special place in Robert's life, as they shared countless memories.
Visitation services for Robert Raymond Maxwell, Sr. will be held on March 18th, 2026, from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluefield, WV. A cryptside service will follow at Roselawn Mausoleum in Princeton, West Virginia, beginning at 2:00 PM and officiated by Rev. Mark Smearman. Mitchell Maxwell, Joseph Nunnery, Chuckie Barton, Kunny Bailey, Mark Simplicio, and Jason Hall will serve as pallbearers. Robert's legacy of love and dedication to his family and friends, coupled with his remarkable career and love for life, will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched. Cravens-Shires Funeral Home is proud to serve the Maxwell family.
