George Streit Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Woodlawn Funeral Home & Garden of Memories on Mar. 7, 2025.
With heavy hearts, we gather to say goodbye to our beloved George Andrew Streit, who was 80 years young. Born in New Iberia, Louisiana, to John and Cecile Streit, George embodied devotion as a brother, soldier, husband, father, papa, worker, and friend. To us, he was truly a hero, always willing to go above and beyond for those he loved.
George served his country with pride in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as part of the Big Red 1 mechanized infantry. Known affectionately as "Tex" during his service, he rose to the rank of Specialist 5, completed officer courses, and played a vital role in advising platoon leaders and training soldiers. His dedication and constant care for his comrades earned him the rank of Sergeant, along with a National Defense Medal, numerous Purple Hearts, and the Bronze Star with the "V" device.
As we remember George, we think of the joy he found in working hard, hunting, fishing, camping, and riding his Harley, especially when sharing these moments with family and friends. George was a problem solver, a fountain of knowledge long before the days of Google. He was always the go-to person for advice and solutions. His ability to achieve the impossible was remarkable, and he always had a way of fixing things and helping others in need. George was selfless, putting others before himself, and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He was strong in every sense, ready to protect his loved ones, and yet he was also gentle, loving, fair, and wise. His crystal blue eyes could light up a room, and his laughter was truly infectious. The legacy of strength, love, and devotion he leaves behind will forever touch the hearts of all who knew him. We will hold onto every treasured memory and aspire to be even half the person he was.
George had an incredible love for his family. He is remembered dearly by his immediate loved ones; his cherished wife of 60 years, Alice Jean Streit; his son, John Raymond Streit; his daughter, Angie Jean McKinnon; and his two beloved cats. He also leaves behind an extended family filled with love, including his grandson, Brian Streit; his granddaughter, Lori Mead; his granddaughter, Ruth McKinnon; his grandson, Alex McKinnon; his son-in-law, Robert McKinnon; and many others who were family in spirit, not just by blood or marriage.
Join us in celebrating George's remarkable life on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at the Woodlawn Funeral Home and Woodlawn Garden of Memories Cemetery, located at 1101 Antoine Drive, Houston, TX, 77055. They can be reached at 713-682-3663.
