George Alton Webb Sr., 97, of Berlin, MD, walked into the presence of Jesus, his Savior, on November 4, 2024. He was welcomed home by his loving wife of 63 years, Nina Ann (Austin) Webb.
He is survived by his children: Cheryl Matthews of Berlin, MD; Sandy Kurka (Glenn) of Ocean Pines, MD; Barby Trader (Ronnie) of Laurel, DE; Tracy Dorman (Jeff) of Millersville, MD; and Joe Webb "Buddy" Lafontaine(Claudia) of Neuse, Germany. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: David, Gretchen, Stacy, Kristie, Chad, Melanie, Jana, Alex, and Zach; 19 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren. All of whom will miss his smiles, jokes, and unending love.
Born December 28, 1926, in Milford, DE to Whitley and Pearl Webb, George was predeceased by his brother Charles Webb (Addie) and 2 sisters; Agnes "Aggie" (Sam) West and Betty Lou (Russ) Perry. His many nieces and nephews will cherish memories of their beloved "Uncle Webby"
A proud World War II Navy Veteran, George served aboard the USS Auburn (AGC-10) in the Pacific Theater, participating in the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima only months after his 18th birthday.
His professional life included many years as butcher and meat department manager at the A&P grocery store in Pocomoke City, MD. He also owned and operated several successful businesses, including Webb's Market, a laundromat, and the Pocomoke Flower Shop. His children always took pride in his many talents as an athlete, gardener, pool player and carpenter.
A long-time member of First Baptist Church in Pocomoke, MD, George served as a Deacon for many years. After relocating to Salisbury, MD, he, and Nina were faithful members of the Nelson Memorial Church in Hebron, MD. His faith was quiet but strong. He always ended every prayer with "Help us love Jesus and love each other, Amen"
A Celebration Service will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at the Berlin First Baptist Church, 613 William Street, Berlin, MD 21811. A visitation will begin one hour prior.
