George Raymond Wessinger, Jr, 81, of Chapin, died on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Agape Hospice House of Lexington.
Born on June 18, 1943, in Newberry County, George was the son of the late George Raymond, Sr. and Callie Mae Lindler Wessinger. He was the first of six children.
George graduated from Chapin High School in 1961. While in school, he drove the bus and worked at Chapman's Service Station, making hot dogs. After graduating, he joined the Army National Guard, serving six months of active duty at Fort Jackson. He remained in the National Guard for six years.
On December 15, 1963, George married Teressa Ann Alewine, the love of his life. They shared nearly 62 years of a deeply loving and devoted marriage. Teressa was the light of George's life, and together, they raised three sons, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
George began working alongside his uncle at Edisto Dairy, delivering milk. He then worked as a meat cutter at Winn-Dixie before moving on to the Chapin Red & White. After his time in the grocery business, George dedicated more than 40 years to Allied Chemical, where he retired after a long and fulfilling career.
He was a member of Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church and also actively attended St. Peter Lutheran Church, where he was an honorary Golden Ager and a member of Primetimers.
George was always on the move, finding joy in staying active and engaged. He loved to travel and embrace the outdoors, whether camping at the beach, fishing in the lakes, or exploring the mountains. His passion for gardening was only rivaled by his love for sharing the fruits of his labor, and he took great pride in cooking-especially frying fish and preparing his famous coleslaw. Above all, George treasured time spent with family and friends. His family was his greatest gift, and he deeply loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandson. From the ball fields to the music gigs, George was always his kids' number one fan.
In addition to his wife, Teressa, he is survived by his sons, Scott (Krystal), Ronnie (Chris), and Stephen (Lacey); grandchildren, Megan, Hunter, Carter, Braeden, Garrett, and Davis Wessinger; great-grandchild, Klayton Wessinger; brothers, Glenn (Martha), Delbert, and Von (Dianne) Wessinger; sisters, Linda (John) Fulmer and Loretta (Tom) Griffin; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at Mt Horeb Lutheran Church and officiated by Pastor Ron Philabaum. Burial will follow at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until the time of the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials go to Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church, St. Peter Lutheran Church, or the American Kidney Foundation.
Memories and messages may be shared with the family on his tribute page at www.whitakerfuneralhome.com.
