George Alton Whitlock (87) was born in Big Sandy, TX on January 1st, 1936, and passed from this world to a better one in Lindale, TX on October 9th, 2023. He was a deeply beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and man. Alton had a life-long relationship with our Heavenly Father and has most recently been a longtime member of the Lyle Street Church of Christ.
Alton was a hard-working small business owner, working many years at his Gulf station, also with his own farm, his firewood business and Whitlock Bait and Tire. He was an avid outdoorsman, often found in the woods hunting, fishing, gigging frogs, tending his garden and animals, swimming in the creek and otherwise enjoying the world God made for us. He could also often be found with a guitar or microphone in his hand, singing and making noise with friends and family to the words of Johnny Cash or Hank Williams.
Alton has moved on to join his wife of 66 yrs, Juanita (Greer) Whitlock who passed form this world on May 30th, 2023. Also preceding him in death, his parents, Frank and Lizzie (Hanson) Whitlock, His brothers Elmo, Coleman, William, Holly Don, and Tony Whitlock, and his sisters Addie Mae Brown and Nellie Jean Snider, along with his many in-laws, some nieces and nephews and other family.
His passing is mourned and remembered by the loved ones he leaves behind, son Rex Neal Whitlock, and son of his heart Willy and his wife Beverly Russell; daughters Cindy with her husband Robert Turner, and Angela Powell whose husband, Ron Powell has passed on; grandchildren Debbie and her husband Michael Reed, Richard Jeremy Wilson, Nicole Wilson, Alan Leeman; and great grandchildren Marie and Kaylee Reed; brothers Billy and Lonnie Whitlock and Sister Elizabeth McClendon along with numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and other family members including nephew Frank Whitlock and family.
Alton's viewing will be at 1:00 pm at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer, TX followed by funeral services at 2:00 pm, officiated by Brother Homer Davis, on Monday, October 16, 2023. Procession and interment to follow at Chilton Cemetery in Big Sandy, TX.
