George Wicks Obituary

George H. Wicks, III

George H. Wicks, III, a loving husband for 54 years, a wonderful father of three, a dear grandfather (Pop) of 9, a supportive brother of 4 siblings and a best friend to many died May 14, 2021 at home at the age of 75.

He was born in Huntington, New York December 11, 1945, the son of the late George Henry Wicks, Jr. and Madeleine Marie Lent.

George was a proud 1963 John Bassett Moore Alumni where he played varsity baseball, was first chair on the saxophone, and was President of the Student Government. He was a member of the Army National Guard from 1963-1969.

George was the owner of American Beauty Produce for 20 years where he grew and packaged potatoes, had 10 acres of strawberries and grew cantaloupes, and cabbage. He was the owner of American Beauty Landscape Company for 10 years where he designed and planted landscaping. He was also a member of Asbury United Methodist Church of Smyrna. George sang in restaurants and at churches under the name "One Man Band" for 5 years.

From 1980 until the present time George had 107 brain and spine related surgeries. He was able to continue to work hard and to cope with constant pain as he stated many times "because of the love of his wife, his family and friends and Jesus Christ. His family's love gave him a reason to fight and Jesus Christ gave him the strength and power." He was an amazing example or perseverance and love.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Bill Newman.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah D. Wicks; his son, George H. Wicks, IV (Benita); his daughters, Patricia L. Bishop (Charlie) and Katherine M. Wilber; his nine grandchildren, Brandon Bishop, Samuel Wicks, Sophia Wicks, Madeline Wilber, Alivia Wilber, Isabella Wicks, Ryla Wilber, Jacob Wilber and Evangeline Wicks; his sister, Madeline Newman; brothers, John Wicks (Debbie), Robert Wicks (Mary) and James Wicks (June); nieces and nephews, Damon, Anna, Derek, Johnny, Chuck, Greg, Mark, J.J., Max and Meggen; and many Wicks first cousins.

A special thank you to the many doctors and nurses who helped him over the last 40 years especially Dr. Donlin Long, Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, Maryland and most recently Bayada Hospice and Shore Care.

A viewing will be held on Friday, May 21, 2021 from 7-9 pm and again on Saturday, May 22, 2021 from 10 am to 12 pm in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 South Main Street in Smyrna. Funeral services will begin Saturday at 12 pm. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Asbury United Methodist Church, 20 W. Mt. Vernon St. Smyrna, DE 19977 and Friendship Methodist Church, 169 Paddock Rd. Townsend, DE 19734.

I’m so sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Wicks. Such a tough guy - and then you’d hear him playing music and realize there was an artist in there too! I’m so sorry for your loss. I know he will be missed by the whole community.

Debbie,

So sad to read of George's passing. Our paths did not cross very much later in life, but my school memories include playing in the school band with George and sister Madeline. May you and the entire Wicks family find comfort and peace in your thoughts of him.

George was a fighter and taught many people who met him along his health care journey the meaning of perseverance and faith. I was fortunate to be one of them. As a nursing student in the 80s I interviewed him. He maintained a sense of humor during his struggles and peppered his replies to the interview with stories and laughter. Sympathies to Debbie and his family. Love, Mary Kay ConoverWalker
