Gerald "Joe" Brown, 91, died peacefully at Manchester Commons on Sunday November 23, 2025.
He was born November 13, 1934, a son to the late Clyde and Velma (Gregory) Brown.
He grew up in Lake City on the family farm, where his father and uncles worked side by side, building the legacy that he would one day carry forward. He graduated from Rice Avenue Union High School. During his school years, he was part of a remarkable football team that completed an undefeated season-an accomplishment he proudly remembered throughout his life.
Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War. He served with the 5th Evacuation Hospital, a mobile medical unit active during wartime. After being honorably discharged in 1957, he met the girl of his dreams outside Fort Bragg in North Carolina. They soon married and returned to Joe's home in Lake City.
Upon his return, he began his career at American Sterilizer, where he remained loyal until his retirement. As a scheduler, he offered many years of dedicated service and deep knowledge to the company. Throughout his life, he remained committed to caring for the family farm and those he loved.
Joe took great pride in his sweet corn-a beloved staple in the community. Each year, people traveled from miles around for what they knew was the best. Every harvest, his wife Rose preserved some of the produce, keeping their family's traditions alive. Together, they canned what they grew and worked faithfully on the farm. Joe's determination and stubborn perseverance kept the farm thriving well into his 80s.
He had a special love for animals, often rescuing and caring for stray cats. Hardworking and always in motion, Joe was a provider, a teacher, and a true community man. He was cherished by all who knew him.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Peggy Stossmeister for her loving care and compassion over the past several years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalee (Mills) Brown who he married March 2, 1957; sisters, Mildred "Bunny" Benton and Audrey Estok; brothers, Raymond Brown, Richard "Pete" Brown, and Greg Flowers.
He will be greatly missed by his family which include his son, Raymond Brown and his wife Susan; a brother, George Brown; and nephew, John Brown, who was like a second son.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Erie Humane Society, 2407 Zimmerly Rd, Erie, PA 16506.
Friends may call Monday, December 1, 2025 from 10:00 am to the time of service at 11:00 am. Burial will immediately follow at Fairview Cemetery.
