Gerald S. Burton, age 92, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully January 28, 2026. He was born May 23,1933 in Cuba, Ohio, the son of the late James W. and Marian (Sewell) Burton.
Gerald was a 1951 graduate of Martinsville High School where he excelled at basketball for the Rockets and earned the nickname "Slick." During his younger years he became an avid bowler and following high school he served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War Conflict and later retired as a Master Sergeant in the Ohio Air National Guard.
In his professional life Gerald was a partner and highly respected painter with Burton Bros. Painting for many years. He enjoyed watching sporting events and dearly loved spending time with his grand and great-grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Shirley M. (Borton) Burton; his son, Michael J. (Martha) Burton of Wilmington; grandchildren, Bradley J. (Kelly) Burton of Wilmington and Ashley M. (fiancé, Mitchell Paradine) Burton of Austin, Texas; great-grandchildren, Kendall, Silas, Elliotte and Laelynn Burton; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Kenneth Burton, Donald Burton, Dorothy Scott and Ruby Minton.
Funeral Services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Brown Funeral Home, Wilmington. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. until time of service at 11:30 at the funeral home. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Sugar Grove Cemetery at a later date. Brown Funeral Home, Wilmington, is assisting the family.
