Mr. Gerald Lamar Dyar Jr, 67, of Newnan, passed away on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on March 28, 1958, he was the son of Gerald "Jerry" Lamar Dyar Sr and Betty Jo Dyar (Burcham). He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Lamar Dyar Sr.
He, his parents, and siblings came to Newnan in 1975, where he attended school and graduated from Newnan High School. After high school, he joined the National Guard and worked at the family business, Newnan Glass Company, where he was Vice President of Operations for twenty years. He began his career in law enforcement in 2001 as a helicopter and aviation mechanic with the Coweta County Sheriff's Department and assisted with narcotics operations as well. He transferred to the Fayette County Sheriff's Department in January 2004, where he served as a Narcotics Investigator until his promotion to Sergeant on August 12, 2016, in CID, Spec Ops. Lamar was a proud coach of both the 22 and BB Gun Clubs through the Coweta County 4-H Extension Office. Under his tutelage, the 22 Team qualified and made it to the Shooting Sports National Championship in Grand Island, Nebraska, in June of 2025.
Survivors include his mother, Betty Dyar; five loving daughters, Heather Muhr (Trip), Elizabeth Helton (Michael), Madison Dyar, Madaline Dyar, & Mary Dyar; and five grandchildren, Annie and Hank Muhr, Chipper Smallwood, Makayla and Daniel Helton; siblings, Holly Dyar, Ann Dyar Denton, and Frank Byron Dyar II.
The funeral is Friday, November 7, 2025 at 11:00 am at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, Newnan, with Chaplain John Govaerts officiating. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Sheffield, Alabama on Monday, November 10, 2025 at 3:00 pm CST. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service at McKoon Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Coweta County 4-H BB Gun Department. Donations can be made to the Coweta County 4-H Extension Office over the phone or with check mailed to 255 Pine Road, Newnan Ga 30263.
