After our dad passed, I always appreciated the fact that Uncle Gerald always kept tabs on our mother. He would stop by to see her every time he was in town. Sometimes he would have one of his granddaughters, Natalie, tagging along with him. After Mom passed he would then always make it a point to stop by and see me when he was in town. He just wanted to keep up with the family. Other circumstances have allowed me to be fortunate enough to get to know Natalie very well in the past few years. She and I have exchanged a lot of stories about Uncle Gerald. A great man! However, I am pretty sure that I can blame at least part of my right shoulder trouble to his handshake.

Uncle Gerald was one of a kind. Well, not exactly since his brothers Junior (our Daddy) and Uncle Chester were characters as well. Although we had not stayed in touch with Gerald, we have truly wonderful memories from the early days when we nephews and nieces were young ones. We pulled the Christmas Eve gift deal on him one year, so he bought a huge amount of fireworks. He piled them up and lit them all at once. Sent everyone running for the hills. He was so very proud of his physical conditioning as evidenced by the competition between him and Chester when they were helping PaPa build his storm cellar. They were seeing who could carry the most bags of cement at a time. It became ridiculous but extremely entertaining. And I still have the image of Gerald hanging sideways like a flag from Mother's porch post, using his forearms for support. We had so many wonderful times at the lake. Those crazy characters created so many great memories for us. Wouldn't have had it any other way.
