Gerald Gene Gardner, 86 passed away contently and serenely on Christmas Eve in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He fearlessly transitioned to the next world with peace and happiness. Gerry was born on August 6, 1937, to Frances Scull and Dwight Gardner in Hinds County, Jackson, Mississippi. He recalled his childhood as one of great excitement and was very close with each his family members, notably with his grandfather, whom he referred to as Papa Daddy. Later, Gerry would relocate to Albuquerque with his mother and stepfather, where he graduated from Highland High School in 1956. Shortly after receiving his diploma, he entered the United States Military. Gerald's distinguished 24-year military career included four years of service in the US Army followed by twenty years in the United States Air force. During his time in the service, he earned an LPN certificate and a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Albuquerque. Gerry worked as a licensed practical nurse in various military hospitals and in many departments including maternity, pediatrics, emergency, and mental health. His service in the military allowed him the opportunity to travel expansively overseas. Gerald and his former spouse, Barbara Gardner spent the beginning of their life abroad where they welcomed two children, Katheryn Frances Truong in Taiwan, and Thomas William Gardner in Germany. While still in the military, Gerry would obtain his private pilot's license. His passion for flying was not merely a hobby, but a reflection of the freedom and beauty he found above the clouds. Whether soaring through the blue skies or sharing tales of his aerial escapades, Gerry was a true aviator at heart. His infectious laughter and funny antics became the stuff of legend, creating an atmosphere of perpetual joy and anticipation. There was never a dull moment in Gerry's presence, as he had an uncanny ability to add light-heartedness and merriment to any gathering. Whether it was a witty remark or a playful gesture, Gerry had an innate talent for keeping everyone on their toes, leaving them guessing what delightful surprise he would unveil next. To be in the company of Gerry was to experience an extraordinary blend of joy and love. His warmth and authenticity resonated with everyone, creating a space where people felt not just accepted, but truly cherished. Gerry's selfless nature was a beacon that illuminated the path for others to follow, inspiring acts of kindness and compassion in his wake. In a world that sometimes felt chaotic and fast-paced, Gerry served as a reminder of the power of simplicity, genuine connection, and the profound impact of a loving spirit. His legacy lives not just in the memories of those who knew him, but in the ripples of kindness and laughter that continue to echo in the hearts of everyone touched by his presence.
After retirement, Gerald spent much of his time with his children and grandchildren. He cherished volunteering at his grandchildren's schools, relishing the moments of driving them to and from school and various activities. On his front porch, he'd unwind with a beer, observing the ebb and flow of numerous stray cats. He made it a point to set out bowls of food and water, ensuring the wandering felines felt welcome in his comforting space. He was an avid book enthusiast, history buff, fluent in multiple languages, stamp collector, and most importantly an all-around animal lover including wildlife. Gerald was a lover of all people and a friend to everyone he met. Gerald was predeceased by his father, Dwight Lee Gardner; Mother Frances Rebecca Scull; stepfather, William (Bill) Scull; and his beloved aunt, Wilma. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter Kathy and her husband Thuy Truong, along with their three children - Ashley, Jack and his wife Lee, and Ellison, as well as his son Thomas Gardner and his wife Christina, and their two children - Olivia and Gehrig. Gerald is also survived by one sister, Trisha Gardner Roper of Montgomery, Alabama; and one brother David Gardner. Thank you Gerry for sharing that in your world, the rabbit will always sing and dance. Gerald Gene Gardner services will be held at French - Lomas Viewing January 10, 2023 from 5:00-7:00.
