Gerald Dean Hanes of Mustang, Oklahoma passed away on Wednesday February 4, 2026, surrounded by his wife and children. He was born in Altus, Oklahoma on June 19,1943 to Dorothy Mae Muse and Robert Earl Hanes. Throughout his life he was the first to offer help, share a laugh, and spread his ornery nature to everyone he met. He was best known by his first name Ornery and his middle name Trouble. He will be missed by all who knew him.

After high school Gerald Dean joined the US Navy, serving on the USS Shields and USS Murray from 1960-1963. He ended his service at the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class. He married the love of his life Kathy in 1961 and they began their family. Gerald and Kathy moved to Okmulgee, Oklahoma in 1963, where Gerald went to a technical school for auto mechanics. After graduation he worked as a mechanic operating a service station. Then in 1967 Gerald joined the Oklahoma City Fire Department. His career with the OKCFD lasted 26 years, seeing him retire as a Major from Station 21 in 1993. After retirement, Gerald and Kathy travelled full time in their motor home, visiting every state in the US. After retirement, Gerald continued his life of service by helping build churches across Oklahoma and Texas. These churches include Mustang Church of the Nazarene in Mustang, Oklahoma; Livingston First Church- Nazarene in Livingston, Texas- TWICE; and Huntsville Nazarene Church in Huntsville, Texas. In his downtime, Gerald also enjoyed woodworking, visiting with family and friends, investigating his ancestry, and of course traveling. At age 72, Gerald was blessed to find his sister Nancy Hixon and brother John Atkinson.

Gerald is preceded in death by his parents and sister Earlene Titus. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; Children: Robert Dean, Ronald Dean, Rodney Dean, and Richard Dean; Daughters in law: Stacie, Erin, and Kayla; and his ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Services will be held at Mustang Church of the Nazarene, 700 E. State Hwy. 152, Mustang, OK on Saturday February 7th, at 10am.
