Gerald Johnson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by James Funeral Home on Jan. 6, 2026.
Gerald "Jerry" Timothy Johnson, 84, of Huntersville passed away January 5, 2026. He was born on December 16, 1941, in Huntersville to the late Thomas and Eula Mae Johnson and preceded in death by brother, Thomas Johnson, and sister Barbara Alexander.

Jerry was a faith filled man who became a deacon an early age. It was rare to have a conversation with Jerry where he did not talk about how God and his faith had led his life. He was a dedicated worker at St. Phillip Missionary Baptist Church and later at New Friendship Presbyterian Church.

Jerry graduated from the historical Torrence Lytle School in Huntersville, NC. He went to work for the town of Huntersville NC where he did every job imaginable for the town during his 40 years there. He was called the "Jack of all Trades" and worked his way up to the Public Works Director. If there was ever a problem the first thing heard was "call Jerry!"

Jerry's dedication and service did not stop on the job. He was a volunteer fireman for the town and the phrase "call Jerry" was not just heard on the job. Jerry would help anyone in the community with plumbing, electrical, mechanical, or other problems without charging a penny. He received many awards for his community service, including the Roosevelt Wilson Service Award, the Torrence Lytle Isaac Achievement Award, and even received the key to the city for his outstanding work after Hurricane Hugo.

Jerry enjoyed many activities, from riding his motorcycle to pitching horseshoes, baseball, bowling, corn hole, and was usually a winner in them all. But his greatest joy was CB radio. Two of his favorite handles were "Jive Turkey" and "Big 19." Over 49 years, Jerry became a living legend in the CB community for his extraordinary command of the CB world. He was known far and wide and earned trophies from states across the US and other places such as Jamacia, Bahamas, Australia and more.

Jerry leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife, Libbie Johnson; sons, Gerald T. Johnson, Jr. of Charlotte, Michael Johnson of Huntersville, Cherod Webber of Mauldin, SC, and Maurice Webber of North Kingston, RI; daughters, Kimberly Johnson of Huntersville and Carmen Webber of Brooklyn, NY; brother Tollis Johnson (Brenda), Andre Watson, and Harvey Watson of Charlotte; sisters Gloria Stroud (Keegan), Marilyn Thomas, Azas Watson, Tammy Watson and Wanda Watson- all of Charlotte, Carletta Jenkins (Stanley) of Temple Hill, MD; and a special sister/friend Gail Reid of Charlotte. Grandchildren Jocqua Laney, Cameron Visor, Devin Visor, and Leighton Webber; great-grandchildren Devin Visor Jr., Dae Ceon Visor, D'Mazi Visor, Joe Ahni Visor, and Camryn Visor; along with a host of other loving family members.

A funeral service will be held at 3 PM Sunday, January 11th, at First Baptist Church in Huntersville; visitation will be 2-3 PM prior.

Burial will follow at St. Phillip Missionary Baptist Church in Huntersville.
