Gerald Laverne Mahon was born June 9, 1936 in
Council Bluffs, IA to Gerald and Joan (Flynn) Mahon. He served in the Nebraska National Guard. He was employed by the Omaha Metropolitan Utilities District, OMUD, as a lab technician. He was baptized into the Catholic Church in 1956 at St. Thomas More Church. He married Marjorie Schmidt on July 9, 1960 in Devils Lake, ND, and Marj then moved to Omaha.
Gerry finished his Bachelor's Degree at Creighton University in 1964 and after 13 years with OMUD, he accepted a position in
St. Cloud, MN, as the Assistant Director of Public Utilities. Gerry moved his young family north and rented a house on the east side of St. Cloud, and he and Marj quickly became life-long friends with a group of neighbors known as the "East Side Gang." They were known for their many gatherings and shenanigans and loved to celebrate with each other the many milestones that family life brings. Gerry and Marj moved to the north side of town where they raised their 3 children and became members of St. Paul's Catholic Church.
Gerry became the Director of Public Utilities in 1978, overseeing the water, wastewater and hydroelectric facilities. Among his many roles and responsibilities, he served on a variety of boards, including being Chairman of the North Central District of the American Water Works Association, AWWA. He eventually became the MN Director serving on the national AWWA board. Gerry retired in 1998.
Gerry loved the St. Cloud area and felt strongly about giving back to the community that served him well. He was an active member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council # 961, where he served as Grand Knight. He also was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie # 622. He volunteered many years with the St. Cloud Hospital and with Catholic Charities, specifically at the food shelf. Gerry was so proud of his children and grandchildren, and if you ever had an audience with Gerry, you would know that. He loved to travel to see family and partake in many events and activities involving his grandchildren, including many many baseball games. He had an incredible "gift of gab" and always took a sincere interest in people and their stories.
He is survived by his wife Marjorie of Sartell; son and daughters, Steven (Judy Mortrude) Mahon of Tofte; Kimberly (Kevin) Geislinger of Grand Rapids; Kelly (Mark) Olson of Rosemount; grandchildren, Madelyn (Brian Finn) Mahon, Harrison (Elizabeth Brennan) Mahon, Andrew (Stephanie) Geislinger, Abigail (John) Enochs, Alison (Jaden) Schovanec, Anna Geislinger, (Fiance Mason Spies), Meghan (Tyler) Hebig, Joshua Olson. 5 great grandchildren, Henrik and Liv Mahon Finn, Avery and Ella Geislinger, Harper Hebig, Riley Enochs and 2 more on the way. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Cindy Halderson, Tim and Randy Elder. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Patricia Elder.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Catholic Charities of St. Cloud, St. Paul's Catholic Church, or Quiet Oaks Hospice House.
