Schenectady- Dr. Gerald C. Matura 94, of Schenectady, died Sunday, April 29, 2012 with his loving family at his side. Dr. Matura was born June 8, 1917 in Schenectady, son of the late Cyril and Blazena Marecek Matura. He graduated from Mont Pleasant High School and was a graduate of Union College in 1937. He then went onto graduate from Downstate Medical School in 1943. Dr. Matura enlisted in the Army and was stationed with the 164th General Hospital in Normandy and was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1947. He returned to Schenectady and opened his General Medical practice on Michigan Ave. He continued his education and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1961 and subsequently opened his Cardiology practice on Union Street. In 1983 Dr. John M. Nolan joined the practice followed by Dr. Robert Parkes, Dr. Douglas Long and Dr. David Armenia. He retired from practice in 1987. Dr. Matura worked at Ellis and St. Clare's Hospitals where he was affectionately known as "Uncle Gerry." Dr. Matura enjoyed traveling and spending his leisure time at his cabin on Sacandaga Lake with his family. Survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Vlasta Anne Matura, son, Gregory and his wife Dorothy; granddaughters, Sara (Daniel) DiBlasio, Jessica (Jesse) Goldfinger, and Elizabeth Matura (Fiancé David Elmendorf); great grandchildren, Kate and Collin Goldfinger; his brother, Joseph Matura and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial on Friday, May 4, 2012 at St. John the Evangelist Church at 9 AM. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 PM to 8 PM at the Jones Funeral home,1503 Union St., (at McClellan St.), Schenectady. Burial will follow the Mass at St. Cyril and Method Cemetery, Rotterdam, Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made in Dr. Matura's memory to The Foundation for Ellis Medicine.
