Gerald Duane "Gary" Nelson

Gerald Duane Nelson, age 74, of Garden City, IA, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, with his family by his side.
Gary was born March 7, 1949 to parents Willard and Arlene (Berven) Nelson in Blue Earth, MN. The family moved to Garden City and Gary attended Garden City Public School and graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1967. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 20, 1969 and served in Vietnam. He returned to Garden City and worked for the Farmer's Cooperative in town. On August 5, 1972, Gary was united in marriage to Patricia Engelson at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, IA. To this union two children were born, Tricia and Christopher.
Gary never hesitated to lend anyone a helping hand and volunteered his time and talents to the community. He served several years on the Ellsworth Cooperative Telephone Association board, was a member of the Radcliffe American Legion Post 317, and over the years was a church Sunday school teacher and trustee.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Patty, their two children, Tricia (Brett) Weiland and Chris (Mandy) Nelson, grandchildren Clay (Breanne) Weiland, Kari Weiland, Connor and Logan Nelson, brother-in-law Tony Ackerman, sister Janet (Gene) Alvestad, brother David (Peggy) Nelson, along with many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Willard and Arlene, brothers Ronald and Larry, and sister Judy Ackerman.
