Gerald Oppenheim Obituary

Gerald (Jerry) Oppenheim
Gerald (Jerry) Oppenheim, 86, of Hamden died on Tuesday, December 2, 2025 at Autumn Lake Healthcare at the Willows in Woodbridge.
Jerry was born in New Haven on June 7, 1939, the son of Morris and Sara Oppenheim.
He attended New Haven public schools and earned a B.S. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business in 1961. After graduation, he joined his father at the family business in New Haven, The Elm City Plumbing Company, where he worked for 40 years. Jerry had various roles at Elm City, and was well known for his intelligence, work ethic and extensive knowledge of plumbing parts, both common and uncommon.
Jerry was kind, loving and supportive, and will be dearly missed by friends and family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judy (Rubenstein) Oppenheim, his sons Steve Oppenheim (Ingrid) and Rob Oppenheim (Alisa), grandchildren Georgia Oppenheim, Louisa Oppenheim, Brian Oppenheim and Evan Oppenheim, sisters Anita Malina (Michael) and Joyce Bohnen (Michael) and many nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends.
Jerry was an avid reader who was interested in and curious about many subjects, especially history. He subscribed to multiple newspapers and magazines, and always had a book by his side. He played the violin throughout his life, and was part of multiple local orchestras, including the Hamden and Cheshire Symphony Orchestras and the Civic Orchestra of New Haven. He was a long-time member of Temple Beth Shalom, and served a term as its Treasurer. He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. He enjoyed many adventures, including trips to Mexico City (for the 1968 Olympics), Israel and Europe, stays at Camp Isabella Freedman and many Road Scholar programs. While generally mild-mannered and quiet, Jerry had a surprisingly good sense of humor.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, 2025 at Temple Beth Shalom, 1809 Whitney Avenue, Hamden with interment services to follow at Keser Israel Memorial Park, Farwell Street, West Haven. Funeral arrangements are in care of Robert E. Shure & Son Funeral Home, New Haven www.shurefuneralhome.com. Memorial contributions can be made to Temple Beth Sholom or Hadassah Medical Center. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of The Willows for their compassionate care.
