Gerald Souder Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anders-Detweiler Funeral Home & Crematory - Souderton on Jan. 5, 2026.
Gerald B. Souder, age 99, of The Community at Rockhill in Sellersville, Pennsylvania for the past eight months, formerly of Harleysville and Morwood, Pennsylvania, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 4, 2026.

Born on September 18, 1926 in Grand View Hospital, Sellersville, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Asher and Viola (Bickel) Souder. He attended schools in the Souderton Area School District through eighth grade and then worked on the family farm.

At age 18, during WWII, Gerald served in the Civilian Public Service in the state's soil conservation programs in Maryland and Virginia and for the forestry program in North Fork, California. After returning home, he began painting houses with his dad and later his brother, James, joined them. He continued that profession for 60 years before finally retiring at age 80. The brothers were known throughout the area for their high-quality work. After retirement, Gerald volunteered at MRC (Material Resource Center) for many years and also helped to serve at banquets that were held at Christopher Dock Mennonite High School.

Gerald's faith and family were central to his life. He was a lifelong and the oldest member of Finland Mennonite Church in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania. He also attended Wellspring Church of Skippack. Reading, singing and musical concerts, John Deere tractors, mowing his lawn, and taking his 1965 Ford Mustang to car shows were some of his favorite things.

He was known for his strong work ethic, generous spirit, and sociable nature, with an unwavering devotion to his faith and family.

He is survived by his four daughters and their spouses: Mary Beth and Joseph Amoroso, Patricia and James Barndt, Nancy and Franco Harden, and Donna and Arthur Landis; his five grandchildren: Alexandra (Amoroso) and husband, Robert Lyon; Mariel Harden, Grant and wife, Emma Harden, Julia (Harden) and husband, Jay Collins; and Dylan and wife, Kelsey Landis; his four great-grandchildren: Juliet Collins, Lucy and Trevor Landis, and Lily Lyon; his sister, Doris (Souder) Morgan; his sisters-in-law, Doris Garges, Elizabeth (Moyer) Howells, and Gloria Moyer; and his brother-in-law, Laverne Moyer.

Gerald was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary (Moyer) Souder, with whom he shared 34 years of marriage, and his second wife, Marian Garges, with whom he shared 16 years. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth (Souder) Hoover, and a brother, James Souder.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026 at 12:30 pm at Finland Mennonite Church, 1750 Ziegler Road, Pennsburg, Pennsylvania 18073, followed by an informal visitation at 1:30 pm.

A private burial will take place at Finland Mennonite Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gerald's memory to: Finland Mennonite Church, 1750 Ziegler Road, Pennsburg, PA 18073 or Wellspring Church of Skippack, 1183 Cressman Road, Schwenksville, PA 19474.

I always liked Uncle Gerald. He was kindly, caring and witty. So far, he is my longest surviving relative. I never heard him complain, either. I look forward to seeing him in heaven someday.
