Gerald Sproles Obituary

It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of our Dad, Gerald "Gerry" B. Sproles. He was born at home in Roanoke, VA, on October 30, 1934, and passed peacefully at his home in Nokesville, VA, on January 11, 2026. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Peggy, and his parents, Roberta and Holland Sproles. He is survived by his children: Kevin Sproles, wife Sandy; Debbie Ritenour, husband Jerry; Kathy Groomes; and Glenn Sproles, wife Velma. His grandchildren: Rachael Groomes, Joshua Groomes, Annie Ritenour, Tyler Sproles, and two great-grandchildren: Miles and Lily. His siblings: Bob Sproles, wife Aurelia; Anne Dancy, husband Bill; Gaye Duckett, husband Ronnie, and many extended family members. Dad was a Navy veteran who actively participated in his church and volunteered in numerous veteran and community groups throughout his lifetime, making many friends along the way. We invite you to join us in celebrating his life on Saturday, March 7, 2026, beginning at 11:00 AM, at Windy Knoll Farm, located at 11602 Kettle Run Rd in Nokesville, VA. Following the service, please gather with us at the Nokesville Church of the Brethren, located at 13002 Fitzwater Dr in Nokesville, VA, to have a meal and share memories about him. In lieu of flowers, Dad requested donations be made to the Nokesville Church of the Brethren.

Lots of memories as my uncle. One is him churning homemade ice cream in the mid 70s over the 4th of July when it was 95* outside. Never any better ice cream than homemade. Another was playing cards with him, Bob (my father) and Glenn (his youngest son) He was very good at any card game we played, just like you would have expected for a Navy guy on a boat for months at a time ; ) He was always in service of so many. I am and will be amazed by his drive to help and serve others. Love ya uncle Gerry

I'm so sad to see this. We attended Osbourn High School and Manassas Baptist Church together for many years. Garry was a special friendbut I hadn't seen him very often in recent years. My love and sympathy to each one of you. God be with you,
MaryAlice (Dodd) Corder

We will miss Gerry volunteering at the Manassas Museum and his devotion to his community. I was glad to interview him as he shared memories for the Manassas 150th Birthday video series. He appears in several videos including this one: https://youtu.be/TNUq6W0IooI

Gerry was one of the most patriotic veterans I have known. He was always there willing to support when asked, and volunteered when not. Gerry was an inspiration to those around him but always humble in what he did for others. The only thing that surpassed Gerry's affection for his fellow veterans was his devotion and admiration of his family.
Rest in peace good friend you will be remembered and missed. May God welcome and keep you.
