Gerald Anthony Starr, the son of Albertha B. James and the late Willis Starr, Jr. was born June 27, 1951 in Florence County, South Carolina. On Sunday, July 2, 2023, our Lord mercifully granted Gerald peace which surpasses all understanding.
Gerald, affectionately called “Jerry” or “Bunny” by those who knew and loved him, attended the Public Schools of Florence County. He obtained his Graduate Equivalency Degree or General Educational Diploma (GED) and earned his Carpentry Certificate while in the Job Corps. He worked various jobs until he became a self-employed licensed Contractor constructing and repairing homes. Gerald accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and joined Saint Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Florence, South Carolina. Gerald met and married Shirley Keith Starr in 1973. Gerald was preceded in death by his father, Willie Starr, Jr.; a sister, Wanda Hanna; and two brothers, Howard Starr and Joseph Hanna. Gerald leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Shirley K. Starr of Timmonsville, South Carolina; four daughters, Marshelle (Chauncey) Murray, Shirleen Starr, Jennifer “Jenny” Starr all of Florence, South Carolina and Brenda Starr (Ted, Sr.) Shaw of Timmonsville, South Carolina; one son, Edwin Starr of Florence, South Carolina; fifteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; his mother, Albertha B. James of Florence, South Carolina; six sisters, Elvora Ann Barr and Jennifer Becote both of Florence, South Carolina, Felicia A. Becote (Jason) Frederick of Blythewood, South Carolina, Andrea Nettles and Tomeka (Miles) Francis and Beverly Smith all of Florence, South Carolina; five brothers, Kenneth L. Becote of Charleston, South Carolina, Lavern Starr, Willie Starr, Antron (Shakina) Starr and Ronald Hanna all of Florence, South Carolina; six aunts to include a special aunt, Florine Becote of Florence, South Carolina, Earline Smith and Shirley (Sam) Merritts both of Florence, South Carolina, Betty Scott of Sumter, South Carolina, Sarah Starr and Annie Ray Starr both of Florence, South Carolina; a special uncle, Frank Barnwell Becote of Florence, South Carolina; eight sisters-in- law and brothers-in-law, Steven (Linda) Keith, Larry (Barbara) Keith, George (Dorothy) Keith, Bell Keith (Willie) Gee, Georgianna Brooks, Tony Keith, Bruce Keith and Marsha Keith all of Timmonsville, South Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
