Colonel Gerald "Jerry" Phillip Timoney Jr., a distinguished US army officer and devoted family man, passed away suddenly on July 31, 2025. Born on January 8, 1957, to Gerald Phillip Timoney Sr., a naval officer, and Joy Binnion Teeft, Jerry spent his early years in Newport Beach, California, before his family relocated to Rhode Island and later settled in
St. Augustine, Florida. After graduating from Palatka High School in 1975, Jerry embarked on a remarkable 37-year military career that took him to various bases around the world, including California, Korea, Virginia, New Jersey, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii. He retired as a Colonel in 2010, having served with honor and distinction. Jerry's military career was marked by numerous achievements, including commanding a Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghazni, Afghanistan, and serving as Defense Coordinating Officer for the western Pacific region. He also worked with the State Department, training and mentoring military personnel in peacekeeping operations and civil-military affairs. Notably, in 2004, Jerry was awarded the Soldier's Medal for his heroic actions in saving a man from a burning truck, demonstrating his bravery and selflessness. Those who knew Jerry remember his infectious sense of humor and his joy in meeting new people. He had a gift for making friends everywhere he went, and his warm smile and quick wit could light up a room. His unique, deep laugh was a hallmark of his presence, and those who knew him well will remember it echoing in their memories. Whether in the military or in his personal life, Jerry's ability to laugh and find joy in everyday moments inspired those around him. After retiring from the US Army, Jerry continued to pursue his passion for learning, earning a Master's degree in Humanitarian Services Administration and a Bachelor's degree in Cultural Anthropology from the University of North Florida. He also hiked the Appalachian and Pacific Crest trails with his son Kirby, walked the Camino in Spain, and traveled through India in 2024. Jerry is predeceased by his parents, Gerald Phillip Timoney Sr. and Joy Binnion Teeft, and his sister, Susan Timoney. He is survived by his wife, Guadalupe; his daughter, Katie; his sons, Kirby, Patrick, and Johnny; his ex-wife, Karen Timoney; his brother, Patrick Timoney; and his sisters, Teresa Timoney, Sally Hawkins, and Gay Sharpe. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, September 4th, at 11:00 a.m. at San Sebastian Catholic Church in
St. Augustine, Florida, to celebrate Jerry's life and legacy. There will be a later inurnment with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Throughout his life, Jerry demonstrated remarkable dedication, leadership, and compassion. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, and his family will deeply miss him.
