Gerald Welding Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Egizi Funeral Home on Feb. 26, 2024.
Gerald L. Welding
Gerald Leo Welding passed away peacefully on February 24, 2024, surrounded by family.
Gerald "Gerry" was born in Philadelphia, PA on July 12, 1930; he was the son of the late James and Catherine Welding.
Gerry proudly served in U.S. Navy, as an aircraft machinist during the Korean war, being honorably discharged in 1952. After being discharged, he enrolled in the Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing, where he met and married the love of his life, the late Alba (Sabatini) Welding. They married on June 16, 1956 and moved to Washington Township, NJ. Gerry was very active in the St. Jude's Catholic Church in Blackwood, NJ, and also a member of the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Washington Township, NJ.
Gerry devoted his life to helping and caring for others and led a successful career as a nurse anesthetist at Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ, before retiring in 1988.
Gerry loved history and traveled to Ireland to trace the birthplaces and burial grounds of his ancestors. Quite a trip that was – no pub was missed and many a pint or two of Guinness' to be had! Gerry's love of history included watching old time war movies and historic biographies. He was also quite the fixer upper – and would say "always an easy fix for anything" and would prove it! Gerry was a romantic at heart, and he and Alba were often seen at the Library IV restaurant every Friday night, where he enjoyed his Irish Whiskey Cake and his "Rusty Nail" in a brandy snifter glass – if not in a snifter, was not the same! He also loved his many German Shepards – all of which were named Blackjack. He enjoyed family dinners and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Gerry was pre-deceased by his beloved late wife, Alba. Surviving are his children, Karen (Peter) Ciminera, of Old Brookville, NY, Michael (Diane) of Mullica Hill, NJ; Linda (Shuba) Maitra of Hollidaysberg, PA, and James (Stephanie) of Washington Township, NJ and three grandchildren, Michael, Matthew and Megan Welding.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gerry's name to the Gloucester County Animal Shelter, Angels Community Outreach, Pitman, NJ, or charity of your choice.
Gerald's life will be honored and remembered privately by his family.
