Thompson Sr and Dorothy Klug Thompson. He graduated from Connetquot HS, Bohemia, NY, in 1964 followed with service to our country in the Army from 1965 to 1967 as a Medical Specialist. After completing his military service, he attended and graduated from Suffolk County Community College earning his RN, AAS in 1972, and continued his career in healthcare at the Kings County Hospital's Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist program in 1976. While living in NY, Jerry administered anesthesia at Brookdale Medical Center, St. John's Hospital system, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and Stony Brook University Hospital before moving to Florence, SC., where he then practiced for McLeod Regional Medical Center from 1991 until his retirement in 2014. Jerry predominantly worked on the OB Unit making many laboring women very happy with his legendary "Jerrydurals". He and Karen moved to the Myrtle Beach area in 2005.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 41 years, Karen (Edwards), his children Eileen De La Torre (Ozzy), Stephen G. Thompson, and Shannon Thompson-McCarthy (Douglas), along with two grandchildren, Jevani DeLaTorre and Greyson McCarthy. He was pre-deceased by his granddaughter, Ellyana DeLaTorre. He was the eldest brother of three siblings, Patricia Ippolito (Carmine), and predeceased by his sister Mary Thompson and brother Robert Thompson (Linda). He leaves behind his loving sisters-in-laws and brother-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and good friends. Jerry was an avid fisherman, boater, traveler and loved his many dogs.
Jerry desired cremation and to be laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island. Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 18th from 2 until 7pm at McMillian-Small Funeral Home, Myrtle Beach, SC. In lieu of flowers, we invite those wishing to honor Jerry's memory to consider a donation to his beloved granddaughter's foundation, The Elly CARES Project.
