Gerry Schmerber Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wright's Funeral Parlor - Kerrville on Mar. 10, 2026.
Gerald (Gerry) Gene Michael Schmerber, age 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at Texsan Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, good neighbor, and a dear friend to many.

Gerry was born on January 28, 1938, in Galveston, Texas, to Auggie Michael and Irene Beckwith Moore. She embraced cowgirl life from an early age, spending treasured years riding horses in Carrizo Springs. During her high school years in Kerrville, Texas, she attended Tivy High School, where she graduated in 1956 and formed lifelong friendships, especially enjoying time riding horses with her dear friend Carol.

She married her high school sweetheart, Joe Schmerber, in 1959. Joe played football for Tivy High School, a sport that would remain close to Gerry's heart throughout her life. Together, Joe and Gerry raised three children: Steve Schmerber of San Antonio, Scotty Schmerber of Kerrville, and Robin Schmerber of San Antonio.

Gerry retired from her vocation as a medical transcriptionist at Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital, a role she carried out with dedication and pride. She was a faithful parishioner at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Austin and later at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in San Antonio.

A passionate football fan, Gerry loved following her son Scotty and grandson Brett, both Tivy Antlers. She also took great joy in watching her grandsons Michael, Matthew, and David throughout their football careers. Beyond football, she found happiness in her beautiful plants and flowers, her craft room and many projects, and creating a warm, country inspired beautiful home. Her love of horses and the rodeo, bull-riding in particular, never faded, and she spent many happy hours throughout her life following her favorite riders.

Gerry was deeply devoted to her seven grandchildren and fifteen greatgrandchildren. Shortly after each child's birth, she lovingly handcrafted a Christmas stocking and blanket for every one of them-a tradition that became a treasured family legacy. She delighted in attending her grandchildren's sporting events, stage productions, recitals, and graduation celebrations. She especially cherished traveling with her daughter to crafting events, flower shows, and antique fairs. Each spring, they made it a tradition to take weekend drives to admire the beautiful Hill Country wildflowers and bluebonnets, with Willow Loop being a favorite destination. Gerry also loved sharing stories from her memorable trip to Scotland. She will be remembered for her determination, strength, adventurous spirit, and deep devotion to her family, and the care she poured into everything she did.

Gerry was preceded in death by her parents and her aunts. She is survived by her husband, Joe Schmerber; her sons, Steve Schmerber and wife Janet, and Scotty Schmerber and wife Marion; and her daughter, Robin Schmerber. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Stephanie Neunuebel and husband Ryan; Michael Schmerber, MD; Jennifer Davila, PhD and husband Jesse; Matthew Schmerber and wife Kyle; David Schmerber and wife Catalina; Alex Schmerber and girlfriend Macey; and Lt. Colonel Brett Schmerber and wife Karissa. She is further survived by her greatgrandchildren: Bethany, Luke, Jack, Caeli, and Theo Neunuebel; Josephine and Juliette Davila; Liam, Tyson, Micah, Rocco, Seton Rose, Seraphina; Riley and Emmaleigh Schmerber.
