In Loving Memory of Ghislaine "Gigi" Gilot
Ghislaine Gilot, known by everyone as "Gigi", a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away at the age of 65 on August 27, 2024, at Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey after a sudden hospitalization. Born on January 22, 1959, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to Andre-Fils Gilot and Germaine Jean-Pierre, Ghislaine embodied love, warmth, and selflessness throughout her life. Her heart was as big as her smile, and she lived every moment with a deep devotion to others.
Ghislaine's life was a testament to the power of giving. She always put others first, whether it was her family, friends, or even a stranger in need. She would give her last dollar to help someone in need, even when her bills were due. Her kindness was not just an act but a way of life, and those who knew her were endlessly inspired by her heart of gold.
After emigrating to the United States in June 1982, Ghislaine settled in Brooklyn, New York, before eventually making her home in Short Hills, New Jersey. She was a loving mother to her two daughters, Gisnaisha and Charlene Claude, and her son, Giovanni Gilot. She also adored her granddaughter, Marlee Gowdie, whom she helped raise with the same care and devotion she had for her children. Ghislaine was also a sister to Carole, Douly, Calixte, and Junior Gilot, as the eldest child, often playing the role of a second mother to them, growing up.
A woman of great faith and a nurturer by nature, Ghislaine found her calling in nursing. She completed High school in Haiti and then completed her GED once she emigrated to America. She then set her sights on becoming a certified nursing assistant and never looked back. She worked for 18 years as a nursing assistant at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson, NJ, in the pediatrics unit, where she was lovingly referred to as "Dr. Gigi" by her colleagues. Her dedication and work ethic were unmatched, earning her multiple accolades such as Employee of the Month. Her soft spot for children and her desire to help others made her an invaluable asset to her team and a cherished caretaker to countless families. Even when life threw her challenges-like her chronic illnesses that eventually led her to step away from her career-Ghislaine remained strong and caring.
Outside of work, Ghislaine's passions were many. She was an extraordinary cook, known for her Haitian dishes that everyone craved. Whether it was a family gathering or a community event, if you needed a meal that would warm the soul, Ghislaine was the one to call. She also loved shopping-often indulging her taste for fine things-and had a joy for traveling, discovering new places, and seeing Broadway shows. Despite her talent in the kitchen, Ghislaine also enjoyed eating out at nice restaurants, savoring both the food and the company of those she loved.
She was predeceased by her parents: Andre Fils Gilot and Germaine Jean-Pieree, and her late siblings: Fanes, Cermount, Nicole, and Ruth Gilot. She is now reunited with them in heaven.
Ghislaine Gilot is survived by her life partner, Fouchard Claude, her children Max Claude, Charlene Claude, Gisnaisha Claude, and Giovanni Gilot, and her beloved grandchildren Marlee Gowdie, Dayffe Claude, Chelsea Claude, Skai Claude, Sebastian Claude, and Imani Claude. She is also survived by her siblings, Carole, Douly, Calixte, and Junior Gilot. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy of love, compassion, and selflessness will forever live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
As we mourn the loss of our dear Ghislaine, we also celebrate her incredible life. She has left a rich legacy in this world and the hearts of her family and friends.
