Gil Goethals Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Weeks' Enumclaw Funeral Home on Jan. 28, 2026.
Gilbert Henry Goethals, age 98, of Auburn, Washington, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at the VA Hospital in Seattle, Washington, from heart failure.

Gilbert was born on January 5, 1928, at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, Washington, to Victor and Leonie Goethals. Early in life, he learned the value of hard work while working with his uncle Camille in a butcher shop and later in his father's bakery.

In November 1950, Gil was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country. On May 2, 1952, he married Nancy Powell. He later started a bakery with his brother Al, went on to work for Albertson's, and eventually answered a calling into the ministry. Gil was ordained in 1967 and served faithfully for many years with the Worldwide Church of God.

Gil enjoyed fishing, hunting, hiking, refereeing, baseball, and traveling. He often said his education came from "the school of hard knocks," reflecting his humility, perseverance, and strong work ethic.

One of Gil's greatest passions was working with youth. He had a rare and unique gift for making young people feel seen, valued, and included. He created a positive, nurturing, and safe learning environment and was not just a mentor, but family. Gil did not tell people how to live-he showed them. It is not overstated to say that he had a lasting influence, directly and indirectly, on hundreds of lives, especially during their youth. To many, he was a legend whose quiet example continues to live on.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Victor H. Goethals and Leonie M. Goethals; his brothers, Ronald Goethals and Albert Goethals; his sister, Mary Louise; his first wife, Nancy Goethals; and his son, Ronald Goethals.

Gilbert is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Leta Ray Goethals; his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and the many lives he touched.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2026, from noon to 4:00 p.m. at Maylee Farm, 17912 150th Ave. E., Orting, Washington.

Gilbert will receive military honors at his graveside committal on Monday, February 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Enumclaw Memorial Park, 623717 SE 416th St., Enumclaw, Washington.

In Closing

Gilbert Henry Goethals will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, proud veteran, faithful minister, mentor to youth, and a man whose life spoke louder than words. His influence, example, and love will continue for generations.

Gil was a sweet, intelligent, Godly man. I & my husband loved being with him, playing cards, & just visiting. I am glad we met him.
