Gilbert Bryson (“Gus”) Carkhuff passed away September 29, 2024, in Pueblo Colorado.
Born June 13, 1932 and raised in Montrose Colorado, Gus spent his boyhood on the family farm south of town. His family moved into town around 1950. Gus graduated from Montrose High School in 1950.
His employment with Western Electric in 1952 began a long and rewarding career in telecommunications, first as a telephone installer in several regions of the southwest US, and later as a supervisor.
Gus Served in the US Air Force during the Korean war.
He married Gloria Bell Newberry on August 31, 1958. After several years of working and living town-to -town, he and Gloria settled in Pueblo Colorado in 1960, where he continued not only his career, but pursuit of many hobbies and interests. Gus loved to travel, and was an avid camper, snowmobiler, ATVer, fisherman, and boater. He was an expert tinkerer and ‘fix-it’ guy. He also enjoyed spending time with extended family on the Western slope and with many co-workers who became close friends.
He could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere - whether on the boat dock, the trail head, the RV park or just out in the front yard while doing lawn work. No matter where you met him he always had a smile, a wave and a welcoming word.
Gloria passed away in 2002. Gus is survived by three daughters – Crystal (Tracy R. Lay) Carkhuff, Maxine (Pete) Schollenberger, and Joni (Greg) Bilger; four grandchildren – Tim Schollenberger & wife Olivia; and Gage, Blaine and Gabrielle Bilger. He is also survived by twelve nephews and their families.
Memorial Service for Gilbert Carkhuff will be at Crippin Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 9 at 11:00am. Graveside service and burial to follow at Valley Lawn Cemetery in Montrose with reception afterwards. Contact Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose for more info.
