Gilbert Wayne Lawrence, 76, of Owensboro, passed away on September 19, 2025. He was born in Tell City, Indiana, on June 16, 1949, to the late Gilbert and Frieda Allen Lawrence.

Wayne grew up in Cairo, Kentucky, and devoted his career to the mining industry, retiring from Highwall Coal Mining.

He was an avid NASCAR fan, always cheering for his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon. Wayne found great joy in tending his vegetable garden and cooking meals for family and friends. He cherished time spent with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Wayne also loved caring for his dogs and never stopped learning, often exploring new topics through YouTube.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Sandra “Sassy” Lawrence; son, Tracy Lawrence, and siblings Clifford Lawrence and Betty Lawrence.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter-in-law, Jo Lawrence; grandchildren, Crystal Matthews (Jon) and Adrian Oglesby; great-grandchildren, Brayden Oglesby, Yazmin Oglesby, Jaxson Matthews, and Brody Matthews; brother-in-law, Keith Sanderson (Lorie); nephews, Marshall Husk (Rosemarie) and Clayton Sanderson (Amy); niece, Kendra Hays (Blake); and great nieces and nephews, Gwen, Luci, Millie, Corrie, Baker, Wally, and Noah.
