Gilbert Smith, 81, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. Born on January 2, 1944, in Mora, Louisiana, Gilbert later moved to Thibodeaux, where he met the love of his life, Bennie. Together they built a beautiful life and raised their family in Texas. Known affectionately as Popo, he was the heart of the family. A true foodie, Popo loved nothing more than sharing a good meal-especially when it meant gathering everyone together. Family time was his greatest joy, and he made it a priority to bring loved ones together often to talk, laugh, and create lasting memories. Popo loved taking family trips, watching RC races, and cheering on the Astros and Texans-but nothing brought him greater joy than cheering for his grandchildren. His boundless pride, warmth, and laughter made every moment with him brighter and more memorable. He is preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Veola Smith, and his brother, Tony Smith. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Bennie Smith; children Rodney Smith (Cathy), Skip Sanchez (Norma), Melanie Muse (Chad), and Scott Smith (Tiffany); siblings Gary Smith, Earl Jr. Smith, Chris Smith, Diane Clement, and Brenda Fontana; grandchildren Jeremy Smith, Alyssa Mesecke, Cody Contreras, Emily Shakhshir, Kristen Sanchez-Kunkel, Trey Contreras, Mariah Sanchez, Ryan Contreras, Edlyn Smith, Alexis Smith, Olivia Smith, Aiden Smith, Cooper Muse, and Ashley Swanzy; along with 12 great-grandchildren who adored him. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers are his grandsons Jeremy, Cody, Trey, Ryan, Aiden, Cooper, and great-grandson, Gavin Contreras, who will carry forward his legacy of love and family. Gilbert's spirit of love, laughter, and togetherness will continue to live on through all those who knew him. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, September 29, 2025 in the Chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. A service celebrating Gilbert's life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 30, 2025 in the Chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. Expressions of remembrance and condolences are welcome and may be left for the family at www.davisgreenlawnfh.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home, 3900 B.F. Terry Blvd. (Hwy 59 South @ FM 2218), Rosenberg, Texas 77471, Phone: 281-341-8800.
