Gilbert Irwin Sweet, age 94, entered into the arms of Jesus on February 15, 2026. Gilbert was born to Ira & Gladys Sweet on May 9, 1931, in Fremont, MI. Gilbert was the second of four children and is survived by his brother, Delbert Sweet of Holton, MI. He was preceded in death by his brother, Vernon Sweet and sister, Vivian Rhines. Gilbert leaves a legacy of many nieces and nephews whom he has passed on his love for the outdoors, his quick wit, and sense of humor.

In high school, Gilbert was a stellar athlete, medaling in track and field as well as playing basketball and running cross-country. He also enjoyed racing horses. Gilbert was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time in the UP at the family cabin. He loved the outdoors and often took his nieces and nephews out searching for wild berries, mushrooms, and treasures in the woods. Shortly after graduating from high school, Gilbert went off to serve honorably in the military during the Korean War. After serving in the military, Gilbert worked for the railroad for many years. He also worked in construction, building bridges in Florida. He was a man of many talents.

Gilbert shared a love of baseball with his nephew, Noel and his great nephew, Harlan. He rarely missed a Tigers game and particularly loved seeing his great nephew excel playing baseball. Gilbert had the most humble, kind, and gentle soul. He was loved by everyone he met, and he was well-known for his spunk and sense of humor. He will be dearly missed by his family and those who knew him.
