Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fischer Family Funeral Services - Saginaw on Mar. 3, 2026.
Gilberto "Gib" Gomez, age 52, of Saginaw, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2026, surrounded by his closest family. In his final act of generosity, Gib gave the gift of life through organ donation, saving and improving the lives of many. Even in passing, his compassion and selflessness continue to live on in others.
He was born on May 18, 1973, to Antonio and Jessica Gomez in
Saginaw, Michigan.
A gifted chef, he proudly served the community at the Log Cabin before his illness. His talents in the kitchen were widely known. To our family, he was the chef for every benefit, cookout, and celebration; if there was a gathering, Gib was on the grill. He built a reputation not only for incredible food, but for the heart behind it.
In addition to his love for cooking, Gib had a passion for fishing, camping, and exploring with Erin and "The Boys." He enjoyed playing darts, disc golf, and was an avid fan of classic rock 'n' roll and attending concerts. Famous for his dance moves - The Running Man, The Worm, The Robot, you could always catch him busting a move. He also had a soft spot for binge-watching HGTV and preparing for the yearly appetizer competition. Gib was a lifelong Detroit Lions fan, loved watching sports, and was especially proud to win two fantasy football leagues this year.
Gib was the absolute heart of our family. He poured his love into every gathering, always the first to show up for anyone who needed it, and he did so with a personality that was truly contagious. Known for his beautiful smile and infectious laughter, he could light up any room. To support this even his childhood nickname was "Smiley". His positive spirit brought comfort to everyone who crossed his path. He was a constant presence, always there for each of us, no matter what we needed. He loved us so deeply that, to many, he was not just a friend but a "brother"-nobody was ever a stranger in his presence.
The most cherished parts of his life were undoubtedly his children and grandchildren. His devotion to his immediate family was unmatched. He traveled across the state to attend every event he could, always showing up with such pride for his loved ones, a pride that radiated to everyone around him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Antonio Gomez, and his brother, Bennito Gomez. Gib is survived by his loving partner and fiancée, Erin Breternitz; his beloved children, Gilbert (Susana Garcia) Gomez, Terese (Tony) Grasso, Felecia (Justin Rapin) Valentine, Cassondra (Dylan) Honsinger, Jesus (Anna) Gomez, Gabrielle (Anthony Godinez) Gomez and Corrina (Jake Funka) Gomez; grandchildren, Luciano Gomez, Giovanni Garcia, Isaias Gomez, Karli Rapin, Isabella Valentine, Kinsley Rapin, Justin Rapin II, Halle Jane Honsinger, Grady John Honsinger, Roman Gomez, and Luciana Gomez; his mother, Jessica Gomez; siblings, Antonio Gomez Jr., and Diane (Nick) Gomez Burden, his future in-laws Connie and Rich Breternitz; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves behind his beloved dogs, Ernest and Walter, known as "The Boys".
We would also like to mention his precious relationships with his brothers Joe and Franko Ortiz, his lifelong friendship with Corrina Benton and her family, Donny Apple and his Log Cabin Family. He served as a father figure to many nieces and nephews whom he adored.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the incredible medical teams who cared for him throughout his journey. We are especially thankful to the dedicated neurosurgery team at University of Michigan Health, the therapy staff at both Chelsea Hospital and MyMichigan Rehab Clinic, the EMTs and nurses who provided skilled and attentive care during critical moments. A special thank you to Gib's favorite physical therapist - his son-in-law, Dylan - who faithfully worked with him weekly. Their time together was more than therapy; it was filled with encouragement, determination, and love.
Until we see you again, Woohoo!
