Gilberto "Blackie" Saenz III peacefully passed into eternal life while surrounded by his loving family on April 11, 2025, at the age of 71. He was born on November 30, 1953, to his parents Gilberto "Blackie" and Maria Luisa Hernandez Saenz Jr. Gilberto will be truly missed by all who knew him and loved him.
Gilberto's life was a testament to the love of family and his country. A beacon of wisdom and kindness, Gilberto instilled in his children the values of honesty, respect, hard work, punctuality, invaluable life lessons, and a deep sense of loyalty.
He graduated from St. Louis High School in 1971. He was highly active in all sports, and one time, he competed in the Golden Gloves Boxing and Conference Wrestling Championships on the same night. He chose boxing, therefore he had to forfeit the wrestling competition. He went on to win the State Golden Gloves Championship that night. He was known as "Mighty Mouse" because he was small but strong.
Gilberto enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1972 where he proudly served his country with discipline, respect, and honor. He served as Squad Leader and retired as Corporal, selflessly giving of his service for our freedom.
Gilberto was known for his vibrant personality, his love for the game of pool, and his warm presence in the Alice Community where friends and family appreciated his passion for Tejano music. He could often be found dancing and singing at family gatherings, where his humor and inviting spirit made him the life of the party, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
As a successful business owner of Blackie's Tax Service for over 45 years, Gilberto's dedication to his work mirrored the love he demonstrated in his personal life. He lived fully and vibrantly, touching the hearts of all who knew him. His memory will be treasured and his presence deeply missed, yet the love he shared will resonate forever in the hearts of family and friends who had the privilege of knowing this extraordinary man.
Gilberto is preceded in death by his parents, Gilberto "Blackie" and Maria Luisa Saenz Jr, and his sisters, Sylvia Cisneros Franco and Belia Anguiano.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 37 years, Criselda "Cris" Saenz. Together, they formed a beautiful family including their three children, Jennifer Lynn Saenz (Ronny), Gilberto Saenz IV (Rebeca), and Veronica Maria Saenz; along with additional daughters, Angelica Maria Saenz, Jezebelle I. Rubinos; son, Shawn Jacob Contreras; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were the pride and joy of his life. His laughter and sage advice will be dearly missed by his loving sister Rose Mary Paez, along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who were fortunate to have known and loved this outstanding man.
Gilberto's family will receive condolences on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at Treviño Funeral Home Alice, 120 E. Front St., from 6:30 PM until 9:00 PM, with a heartfelt eulogy at 7:00 PM.
