Gillian May Maxwell

Gillian May Maxwell, surrounded by her family and at peace, left this life on February 28, 2026, to join her beloved husband, William; her parents, Victor and Lilian; and her two sisters, Peggy and Lily.

She is survived by her sister Sylvia; her four children, Natalie, Matthew, Daniel, and Katie; her two grandsons, Bryant and Aiden; her two great-granddaughters, Savvy and Sawyer; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, and friends she cared for so deeply.

Gillian was born in post-war London, the youngest of her siblings-an experience that forever shaped her view of the world. She enjoyed 18 years with her strong father and nearly 50 years with her mother, who taught her the meaning of hard work and how to lead a strong family.

At 18, she met and married her American husband in Germany and spent the next 15 years moving her growing family between England and Ohio. During their years living in England, she co-managed her husband's wine and spirits shops in London and Sherborne, playing an active role in the family business while raising their children.

At 40, she completed college and became a nurse, balancing her professional career with family life during their years living on a farm. Her nursing work-caring for newborns, the elderly, and those facing mental illness-was a calling she carried with deep compassion and pride. She often brought her work home in stories shared around the dinner table-much to her children's chagrin-offering vivid glimpses into the lives she touched and the lessons she carried with her.

She also volunteered through her church and with immigrant groups, serving her community in ways that reflected her generous spirit.

Gillian demonstrated an extraordinary ability to grow and adapt across her nearly 78 years. A lifelong learner and devoted reader-particularly of history, she was endlessly curious about the world and its people. She remained grounded in her beliefs while embracing the richness and diversity of her community and family. She delighted in sharing the cultures she treasured, the books she loved, and the ideas that inspired her. If you asked her, she was a poet, an opera singer, and a culinary chef.

She loved being an American citizen but also cherished her British roots, which she proudly stood for in her family's history. Her life's journey gave her a deep sense of empathy for those she cared for and a lasting belief in imagining a future better than the present-something she first learned as a child.

Gillian's legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her many beloved nieces and nephews.

Having given so much to those she loved, her family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Four Seasons Elizabeth House, where she was so wonderfully cared for in her final days.
