Gladys Irene Hertle, age 98, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at The Cedars of Austin. Gladys Irene Harrington was born at home in Red Rock Township on March 13, 1927, to Verner and Iva (Noffsinger) Harrington. The family moved to a farm in Taopi, Minnesota, where Gladys and her sister rode a horse to the country school through the 8th grade. She then went on to graduate from Adams High School. On October 8, 1949, Gladys was united in marriage to Marvin Hertle in Austin. Together, they enjoyed 50 years and 6 months of marriage. Gladys worked at Austin Public Schools in the lunch program as a cook for 22 years. She cherished traveling with her family, with memorable trips to New Orleans, Alaska, and Hawaii. She also looked forward to annual fishing trips with Marvin to Leech Lake, Sand Lake, and Mille Lacs Lake. Gladys was a devoted member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Austin; she contributed to the church’s dining room and was active in a sewing group for over 50 years. She belonged to the Senior Citizen Center, where she enjoyed participating in exercise groups and taking bus trips with her friend, Evie. Following the passing of her husband Marvin in 2000, Gladys embraced her new home at Chauncey Apartments, where she enjoyed her time playing cards, bingo, and organizing monthly dinners for the residents. Her hobbies included embroidery, knitting, and in her later years, enjoyed bowling well into her 90s.
Survivors include her children, Rick (Ann) Hertle of Minneapolis, MN, William (Sheryl) Hertle of Austin, MN, Kevin (Lisa) Hertle of St. Paul, MN, and Deborah Dovi (Abe Ghorbani) of Millville, MN; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Verner and Iva Harrington; husband, Marvin in April of 2000; two granddaughters, Christein Dovi and Gabrielle Perry; brothers, Leonard, Clifford, Everett, Donald, Raymond, and Bud; sisters, Evelyn Bell and Viola O’Connor; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A funeral service for Gladys will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota. The visitation will take place from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, at Worlein-Hoff Funeral Home in Austin and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin. Memorials are preferred to Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. Services are prearranged and performed by Worlein-Hoff Funeral Homes of Austin.
