"He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters." Psalm 23:2 Mother Gladys Jeffers, age 92, of Brooklyn, New York, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on November 16, 1932, in Raleigh, North Carolina, to the late Ella R. Revis and Eddie Hilton. Gladys attended school in Wake County, where she later met and married Edward McCoy Jeffers on October 25, 1948. Shortly after, in November 1948, the couple moved to New York, where Gladys built a life as a devoted wife and mother. She was also a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star, where her service and commitment to faith, family, and community shone brightly. For several decades, Mother Gladys and her family were faithful members of Brownsville Community Baptist Church, where her faith and service were central to her life. Following the passing of her first husband, Gladys later met New York Police Officer Leroy Ruffin, who retired from the 73rd Precinct and owned a successful photography studio in the Williamsburg community of Brooklyn, NY for more than 30 years. Together, they created a loving family life until his passing. Gladys retired in 1992 from the New York City Human Services Department, where she served the Brooklyn community with excellence and compassion. Throughout her 92 years, she was admired for her grace, kindness, strength, humor, generosity, radiant smile, and pure love. Gladys enjoyed international travel, family vacations, and good food, especially gourmet desserts like pie à la mode and the original cheesecake from Junior's Restaurant in Brooklyn. She delighted in introducing her family to enriching educational and cultural experiences. She dedicated time to volunteering as a companion for the sick through the Henry Street Organization, faithfully attended church every Sunday, and always cherished time spent with family. She leaves to cherish memories, her children, daughter Fay Jeffers, sons Tyrome Jeffers, and Terrence Ruffin; her daughter-in-law, Nicole Ruffin; her grandchildren, Chevon Jeffers, Tynita Jeffers, Tykia Hazel, Tishonna Ferguson, Jalisa Brown, Tatyana Ruffin, Tayvon Jeffers, Terrence Ruffin Jr., and Kennedy Ruffin; her great-grandchildren, Naszir Taylor and Matheu Brown; great-great grandchild, Navi Taylor and a host of other loving relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Linda Jeffers, son Kenrick Jeffers; siblings, James Hinton, Lonnie Revis, Mildred Muldrow, Ella Hinton, Roscoe Hinton, and James Revis. We will forever cherish Gladys in our hearts and memories. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and honor the beautiful life and legacy of Mother Gladys Jeffers.
