Gladys Marie White Peeke of Selma, Alabama, peacefully entered the presence of her Savior Jesus Christ surrounded by family on December 23, 2025, her 76th wedding anniversary.
Gladys was born December 1, 1928, in Sprott, Alabama. She met the love of her life, J.B. Peeke Jr., while working at Eagles department store in Selma and married him on December 23, 1949. She worked many years at Brown Drug where she would take her grandchildren to ride the horse and buy bubblegum. Gladys was an active member of First Baptist Church. She loved her Sunday School class and was sure to attend worship in person or online every Sunday.
Gladys was a wonderful wife, a loving mother, and a storybook Granny to her grandchildren; however, she absolutely shined as a Gigi to all of her great grands. They could convince her to try anything from playing with dogs (which she never enjoyed before) and cheering at baseball games to taking boat rides and even being a Flower Gigi! She loved all desserts- never skipping an opportunity to enjoy one, especially those baked by her son in law. You could always count on her beautiful petunias blooming the entire summer as she tended them with care. Gigi enjoyed sending cards to bless those she loved on special occasions. She took much time choosing the perfect one for each person. Granny excelled at Word Searches working diligently on them each day, and, most importantly, as a devoted follower of Jesus, she spent time daily in His word. Gladys was known as a true prayer warrior, and frequently had others asking her to lift them in prayer.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Peeke Jr.; her parents, James Lawley White and Mattie Pearl Ashe White, as well as her siblings, Nita White Childs, James Carson White and Cornelius Ralph White.
Gladys is survived by her daughters, Judy Peeke (Barry) Reed and Connie Peeke (Lawson) Shepherd; adored grandchildren, Amy Reed (Chris) Dramer, Barry Bryan (Shannon) Reed, Blanton Plummer (Shannon) Reed, Jennings Shepherd (Richard) Tisdale and Caitlin Marie Shepherd; eleven great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby White Henley and Lillian "Bean" White Acton; sister-in-law, Eleanor Peeke Derryberry.
Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church on January 8, 2026, at 10:00 with a celebration of life beginning at 11:00 with Dr. Timothy Mathis officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma directing. Private family graveside will follow. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons Chris Dramer, Bryan Reed, Blanton Reed, Richard Tisdale, and great grandsons Gates Dramer and Silas Tisdale.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to First Baptist Church; PO Box 1186, Selma, Alabama 36702.
