Gladys Irene Volner, of Potosi, Missouri, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at the age of 86, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on January 30, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Garner and Minnie (Morgan) Parmley.
Gladys dedicated approximately 24 years of her life to serving as a supervisor within housekeeping at the YMCA. Her commitment to her work was evident, and she cherished her time there, often expressing excitement about visiting the YMCA even after her retirement. Her professional life was marked by hard work and a determination to stay busy, traits that resonated throughout her personal life as well.
A collector at heart, Gladys had a passion for acquiring unique treasures, from Mardi Gras beads and spoons to marbles and sea shells. Her adventurous spirit extended to frequent yard sales, Goodwill excursions, and thrift store outings, all in search of great deals. She was always ready to lend a helping hand, often purchasing items "just in case someone needs it," reflecting her generous and thoughtful nature.
Gladys was a devoted mother and grandmother, known for her love of family and her nurturing spirit. She took great pride in sewing various items for her family and cooking meals that brought everyone together. Her creativity shone through in the special Valentine's Day Card boxes she crafted for her children to take to school.
In her enduring partnership with her late husband, Elmer Volner, whom she married on June 11, 1955, Gladys found joy in gardening and canning vegetables, creating a shared space of love and labor. Their 55 years together were filled with mutual support and affection, which left a lasting impact on their family.
Described by her family as caring and gentle, Gladys was a woman of great compassion who consistently offered her resources to help those in need. She treasured the company of her family, particularly enjoying time spent with her grandchildren. She leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will forever be remembered.
Gladys is survived by her six children: Rick Volner (wife, Cheryl), Christine Yarbrough (husband, Mike), Jacquelene Gibson, Tammy Rice (husband, Mike), Brenda Yarbrough (husband, Kevin), Dana Eye (husband, Buddy); 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; five sisters-in-law: Frances Cooper, Hilda Volner, Debbie Parmley, Jane Volner, and Wilma Parmley; brother-in-law Mike Volner; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Garner and Minnie Parmley; her husband, Elmer Volner; her granddaughter, Misty Gibson; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Anderson; five siblings: Billy Richards, Bobby Parmley, Hurshel Parmley, Perry “Tweed” Parmley, and Mildred “Mickey” Parmley; along with many other dear family members.
