Glen Dale McLain, affectionately known as "Mac," passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025,surrounded by his family. Born in
Irondale, Ohio, on October 2, 1935, Mac lived a life marked by dedication, adventure, and a profound love for family and community.
Mac's journey began in Irondale, where he graduated from Irondale High School with the Class of 1953. His talent on the baseball field earned him a scholarship to Eastern Kentucky, and his pursuit of knowledge took him to Ohio State and The College of Steubenville. Driven by a sense of duty and adventure, he joined the Air Force with the aspiration of becoming a jet pilot.
For 45 years, Mac dedicated his talents to Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, contributing his skills in various roles within the company, including the BOF and caster units, pattern shop, and as an electrician and carpenter. His hard work and dedication were recognized with the Presidential Recognition Award, a testament to his unwavering commitment and professionalism.
Beyond his career, Mac's heart lay with his family and community. As a founding member of the Knoxville Volunteer Fire Department and an elder and member of Hilltop Presbyterian Church, he served tirelessly. He also actively participated in the Raritan Club, fostering a spirit of fellowship and service.
An inspirational leader and mentor, Mac's passion for guiding young minds shone through his roles as an Odyssey of the Mind Coach and Scout Leader for Troop 143-Island Creek . He led his troop on a memorable 75-mile hike along the Appalachian Trail, instilling values of perseverance and teamwork.
Mac was a man who loved the outdoors, whether farming, hunting birds and rabbits in his younger years, or simply enjoying nature's beauty. His true joy, however, was always found in the company of his beloved family.
Mac is survived by his devoted wife, Carol Anita (Rose) McLain, with whom he shared a remarkable journey of nearly 70 years since their marriage on January 28, 1956. Together, they raised four children: Connie (Bob) Musgrave of Steubenville, JoAnn Piccin of Arizona, Terri (John Webber) McLain of Rogers, and Glen "Eddie" (Janet) McLain of Toronto. His legacy continues in his grandchildren: Bob Musgrave, Jr, Brad Musgrave, Justin Piccin, Jesse Bible, Joseph Piccin, Narayana Cieslak, Keshava Cieslak, Dwija Cieslak, Gene McLain, Sarah McLain, and Kyle McLain. He is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren, for whom he was an endless source of love and inspiration.
Preceded in death by his parents, Edgar E. and Helen Marie (James) McLain, and siblings Ruth, Jean, Esther, Jack, Rachel, Bill, Mary Ann, and his infant brother, James.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2024, from 4-7 PM at the MacLean Chapel of Care Funeral & Cremation Specialists, Riverside Ave, Wellsville. A celebration of Mac's life will follow on Friday, October 24, 2025, at 12 PM, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Mac will be laid to rest in Morning View Cemetery in Irondale, a fitting resting place for a man whose roots ran deep in the community he cherished. Following the cemetery service, a luncheon will be held at Hilltop Presbyterian Church in Toronto, OH
