Glenn Edwards, the son of C.R. and Leone Edwards, was born on May 30, 1931 on a farm east of Webber, Kansas. He was one of 12 children. He passed away on June 10, 2025 at the Brodstone Healthcare at
Superior, Nebraska at the age of 94 years, and 11 days.
In March of 1932, when Glenn was 9 months old the family moved to a farm on the state line south and west of Hardy, Nebraska. He attended Hardy Public School 1st through 12th grade. He participated in football, basketball and track all 4 years of high school and for 3 years he did the pole vault, winning each year. He was selected for all state in football his senior year.
Glenn attended Doane college after graduating from high school. He played football and competed in track. He also competed in the pole vault at nationals in Texas where he tied for 2nd and his form of transportation was hitch hiking. He also competed in the Senior Olympics in Florida and Phoenix at the age of 90.
In August of 1952, he was inducted into the United States Army and was sent to Fort Ord in California, then Fort Lewis in Washington, then on to Korea. He heard the peace treaty had been signed while he was sitting on the dock of Tokyo. While in Korea, he served as a cook in the fields. He had the opportunity to meet Marilyn Monroe while he was in the hospital in Tokyo. He eventually came back to San Antonia, Texas and then Fort Chaffee, Arkansas and was honorably discharged and came home in May of 1954.
On June 27, 1954 he was united in marriage to JoAnne Sorensen. Four children were born to this union: Gregory Alan, Jeffrey Nels, Becky Jo and Randolph Clinton. They lived on the Sorensen family farm north of Hardy for 3 years where he helped with the farming. They later moved to the farm ½ mile north in June of 1957 and continued to live there.
Glenn served on the Hardy cemetery board for many years, and was a member of the American Legion. He ran a coffee shop in Hardy for many years and had a museum with Hardy memorabilia next to it.
They went to Jamaica when Glenn served on the Hardy coop board, and they also went to Europe while their son Greg was stationed in Germany. They enjoyed traveling and drove many miles to watch their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren participate in sports and music. He was a farmer and gardener, and had a good market for his sweet corn and vegetables at a stand on the highway west of Hardy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife JoAnne, sisters Elsie (Dale) Tallent, and Norma (Elvin "Spud") Hobson and brothers: Robert (Toby), George, Russell, Paul (Denelda), Donald, and Bruce, sister-in-law Sandra Bothwell, and grandson-in-law Matthew Carpenter.
Survivors include his children: Greg (Rhonda) of Hardy; Jeff (Laurie) of Scottsdale, Arizona; Becky (Steve) Bruening of Superior; and Randy (Shelly) of Lincoln; 11 grandchildren: Matt (Jessi) Edwards, Lance Edwards, Gina (Nick) Kroon, Blake Edwards, Logan Edwards, Lainey Edwards, Brittany Carpenter, Rachel (Zach) Loucks, Stacy (TJ) Froehlich, Katelyn (Tyler) Evans and Alex (Jalen) Weeks; 18 great grandchildren: Lilly, Dylan, Marley, Nola, Emma, Krae, Ella, Kora, Wyatt, Barrett, Elsie, Callan, Max, Sam, Beau, Crew, Jack and Dutton; siblings Margaret Tomlinson of Lincoln, Donna (Jim) Miller of Superior and Kenny Edwards of Sabetha, Kansas, Marilyn Edwards, Lorelei Edwards and Joan Edwards; brother and sister in laws, Tom (Judi) Sorensen of Hardy, and Nancy (Gary) Bargen of Olathe, Kansas and Lawrence "Lefty" Bothwell of
Superior, Nebraska,, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
