Gloria Torres Bryan Hernandez passed from this world on January 28, 2026, secure in the knowledge that all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, gathered to share their love and final goodbyes.
Gloria was born Gloria Bryan Torres, on September 26, 1942, in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico, to Jose Enrique Bryan and María Guadalupe Torres de Bryan. She married Silverio "Yeyo" Hernandez on June 5, 1961.
Gloria spent her childhood and early youth, in Mexico, going back and forth from town to her grandfather's ranch, riding horses, swimming in the streams, and climbing trees. She learned, at a young age, to treat her own scrapes and skinned knees after being warned she wouldn't be allowed to play outside anymore. Her family survived more than one flood in Acuña, losing their home in the '54 flood. Tragedy turned to adventure as they evacuated to higher ground to spend time with her aunts while they waited for the waters to recede.
Gloria and Silverio celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2021. While Silverio was working hard, running a business, Gloria was at home busy raising six children. The early years were hard, but she had a knack for stretching a pound of hamburger or a dozen eggs into meals that kept a hungry household going all day. It wasn't long before a parade of Hernandez kids, four girls and twin boys, began attending Del Rio's public schools. Through it all, there was Gloria, meeting teachers, making lunches, fixing clothes, and driving kids around – often more than just her own – from one end of town to the other. She was a mom to friends, nieces, and nephews who knew they could count on her open door.
Gloria left behind the wisdom gained from hard times and heartbreak. With a keen wit and unmatched recall of stories, Gloria was always ready with a pragmatic assessment of whatever the day or the circumstances presented. She took pride in her children's accomplishments, wept with them when they hurt, and protected them fiercely when they needed an advocate or encouragement. Then came grandchildren, each of whom, in Gloria's eyes, were precious and perfect, incapable of wrongdoing.
Gloria was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Silverio; three infant children, Alonzo, Patricia, and Rafael;
her parents, Jose Enrique Bryan and Maria Guadalupe Torres de Bryan; her siblings Olga Bryan Barrera (Eleazar), Santiago Bryan (Aurora), Guillermo Bryan, Tomás Bryan (Amanda), Nora Bryan, Juan José Bryan, and four infant siblings.
With her passing, Gloria leaves behind her six children: Hilda Hernandez Baker (Graham); Clara Hernandez; Anabel Hernandez Barriga (Ernest); Abril Hernandez; Orlando Hernandez (Zulema); and Rolando Hernandez; her grandchildren: Miguel, Sabrina, and Dariela Hernandez, Samantha, Miranda, Rolando Jr, and Lunnah Hernandez; Nicolas (Alexis Smith) and William Baker; and Ryan (Jean Therese) and Aidan (Dimas) Barriga, her great-grandchildren: Athena Hernandez, and Ezekiel and Joaquin Barriga; and her sisters-in-Law, Irma Proctor (Terry), Estefana Hernandez, and Sandra Hernandez.
Waiting for her at the gates of eternal life are the love of her life, Yeyo, and her three infant children. There, Gloria begins anew, and her strength lives on in us all. "In paradisum, deducant te angeli."
Footprints in the Sand
One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.
This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from
anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.
So I said to the Lord,
"You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during
the most trying periods of my life
there have only been one
set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most,
you have not been there for me?"
The Lord replied,
"The times when you have
seen only one set of footprints,
is when I carried you."
