Gloria "Nonie" Gay Odom
Gloria "Nonie" Gay Odom, 78, of McCamey, TX, passed away on June 4, 2024 in Big Lake, TX at the Reagan County Care Center. She was born on August 18, 1945, in Hobbs, NM, to the late Gomer Gamble Rogers and Edith Louise Thompson Rogers.
She moved to Iraan, Tx in the 6th grade and graduated from there in 1963. A chance meeting with the love of her life would occur at a sleepover at her friend Sofrona’s house (who eventually would become her sister-in-law) when she needed to borrow a t-shirt that would fit over her cast. Thank goodness for a broken arm. She attended University of North Texas in Denton for a couple of years and moved back home and began dating Eddie Odom. He convinced her to elope and they were married on April 14, 1966. They moved numerous times while Eddie worked for Shell Oil Company and in 1973 they were transferred to McCamey, TX and called it home until their passing. They were married for 38 years when Eddie passed away in December of 2004.
Nonie, as she was affectionately known, was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was the best cheerleader for her grandchildren, always seen proudly wearing maroon and white to support those Red Devils at their school events. Nonie had a passion for all things western, as evidenced by her extensive collections of Louis La'Mour and Elmer Kelton novels, as well as limited edition prints by artists such as Tom Lovell, Nelson Rhodes, Robert Summers, Dalhart Windberg and Wayne Baize.
In her professional life, Nonie worked as a Florist at Colonial Flowers, where her creativity and dedication shone through in her floral arrangements. Nonie was a member of the First United Methodist Church of McCamey.
She is survived by her daughter, Carrie Templeton, and her husband Clint of Rankin; grandchildren Brittany McIntosh (Tyler) of McCamey, Amye Griffin (Devan) of Iraan, Camryn Templeton, and Tristan Templeton; great-grandchildren Kyla Grace Griffin and Everleigh Rayne McIntosh; sisters Simone Woodall of College Station and Leta Gipson of Louisville, KY; Sister-in-law Sofrona Smith of Geary, OK; nieces Cheryl Hager, Judy Kay Dean, Niki Golden and Daryl Cross, and nephews Gordon Nixon and Tim Smith. Nonie was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie John Odom, and niece Elizabeth Anne Gipson.
Pallbearers will be Tristan Templeton, Tyler McIntosh, Devan Griffin, Eric Myers, Wayne Lynch and Larry Bradley.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2024, from 5:00pm-7:00pm at the Shaffer Nichols Funeral Home Chapel in McCamey, with funeral services on June 7, 2024, at 10:00am at the Shaffer Nichols Chapel, followed by burial at Resthaven Cemetery, McCamey.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that charitable donations be made to West Texas Rehab in San Angelo, TX, or Hospice of San Angelo, organizations that held a special place in Nonie's heart.
