Gloria M. Puryear Solomon passed away on June 6, 2023, in Tracy, CA. She was born on July 25, 1936 in Norfolk, Virginia.
Gloria's parents, Richard Anderson Puryear and Sallie Mae Puryear, had nine children. Seven of their children have preceded her in death. She was the eighth child to pass. The last sibling living, is the ninth youngest, Sallye Mae Puryear whom she loved dearly.
Her parents passed away when she was young. Her older sisters, Vivian Juanita Billups, husband (Theodore) and Bernice Lois Cooke, husband (Herbert) saw that the younger siblings were cared for and received an education all the way through the completion of Higher Learning.
Gloria graduated from Virginia Union University. She married Charlie Solomon, Jr., who was in the United States Navy. Of that union, they had four children, Wendell, Angela, Michael, and Charles.
She leaves to cherish her memory three children, Angela Solomon-Adams, son-in-Law (Rick), Michael Solomon, Charles Solomon, daughter-in-law (Sharon); 19 grand & great grand whom fondly called her "GG ma"; sister, Sallye Puryear; sister-in-law, Hazel Puryear; nieces & nephews.
Gloria retired after 35 years at the Oakland Unified School District. She also headed up one of the first Head Start programs in the 60's and Tri City 4C's program in the 80's. She has traveled extensively abroad as she started Global Outreach Ministries where she evangelized in Germany and also at Woman's Aglow Ministries.
A memorial service will be held 12:00 Noon Saturday, July 22, 2023 at True Vine Baptist Church, 695 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, Virginia., with Rev. Dr. Irvin D. Melvin, Officiating Pastor.
