Gloria helped me weather my time as editor of The Cambridge News. There she sat behind a monster typing machine on which she cranked out every piece of newsprint text -- submitted by me, the weekly school lunch, or press releases from various organizations -- all into various column widths. Then she had to learn a new computerized version.

She was the backbone that kept the operation running. Another of her jobs was to pick up the finished papers from the printer, seeing to the distribution for circulation and sales. I remember her asking the publisher for a raise. She received $0.25 an hour boost.

All that and she was fun to work with.
