Reverend Gonzalo Ferrer

Reverend Gonzalo Ferrer, TOR (Franciscan, Third Order Regular), died on May 17, 2025, at the age of ninety. The son of the Pablo Ferrer Saurina and Juana-Ana Pujadas Duran, he was born in the town of Inca on the island of Mallorca in Spain on July 19, 1934. He entered La Porciuncula Franciscan Seminary in 1946 and took solemn vows in 1956. Rev. Ferrer served as a missionary in Brazil from 1958-1963 and in Peru from 1968-1971. He first served in the United States in 1971, working closely with the Hispanic community of Sacred Heart in Waco and then Our Lady of Guadalupe in Temple beginning in 1977. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 9, 1982 at Saint Francis on the Brazos in Waco. Rev. Ferrer remained at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Temple as assistant pastor until 1995, at which point he became chaplain of Ft. Hood until 1999. From 1999 to 2002 he was a chaplain of the Christus Health System within the Shreveport/Bossier City metropolitan area. He returned to Austin Diocese and began service at San Francisco Javier in 2002. Rev. Ferrer retired in 2009 but continued to serve occasionally as a chaplain at Ft. Hood/Cavazos and assisted in parishes in the Killeen/Temple area. He was beloved by many people as they saw him both as their priest and their friend, especially the Hispanic communities where he served. Throughout his life Father Gonzalo made friends, touched hearts and inspired many to give from their hearts as he always did. Father Gonzalo gave all of us an example of a holy life that was dedicated to the service of others and fidelity to Christ and His Church. In fitting tribute to this wonderful servant of God and on the occasion of his 90th Birthday in 2024, the parishioners of Saint Joseph in Killeen, as well as many friends, all turned out in great numbers to celebrate Father Gonzalo's birthday in a grand celebration and tribute dinner. Reverend Gonzalo Ferrer is preceded in death by his parents, Pablo Ferrer Saurina and Juana-Ana Pujadas Duran, and his brother Rev. Antonio Ferrer. The funeral liturgies will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Killeen, TX, on Thursday, July 17 beginning with Rosary and Vigil at 9am, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11am. He will be interred at Killeen Memorial Park Cemetery, 3516 Lake Road, Killeen, TX.
