Gonzalo "Chalo" Hernandez, age 86, passed away on November 30, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 4, 1939, in Cotulla, Texas to the late Ramon and Flora Hernandez.
Chalo was a man known for his strength, humor, and deep love he carried for his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather, he lived a life rooted in his hard work, loyalty, and quiet wisdom. His stories, his laughter and the comfort of his presence will be cherished forever.
An avid bowler and golfer who enjoyed friendly competition and the friendships he built along the way. He had a deep love for Tejano music and could often be found dancing to it with joy and pride. He especially cherished his Texas roots and took great pride in being from the Lone Star State. Chalo was also a dedicated Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears fan, and he loved watching games with his family- whether cheering from the ballpark stands or from his favorite spot in the living room. He took great pride in his work, dedicating 40 years of service to Inland Steel, where he was admired for his strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Anna Maria Hernandez; his parents, Ramon and Flora Hernandez; and his siblings; Ray Hernandez, Angeline Gonzales, Lucia Mendoza, Maria Trinidad Niaves, Elida Marquez and Adela Perez.
He is survived by his five children; Roel (Cynthia) Sr., Rene (Josephine) Sr., Elizabeth (Octaviano), Michael (Rita) Sr., and Debbie. His sisters, Esperanza Torres and Lydia Mendoza, his brother, Robert Hernandez, and beloved niece and caregiver, Gloria Feagin.
Gramps leaves behind 14 grandchildren; Roel Jr., Rene Jr. (Abigail), Jennifer (Billy Jr.), Stephanie, Christopher (Carina), Andrae (Marianne), Luis, Amanda, Marcus (Patricia), Alyssa, Michelle (Alfredo, Jr.), Michael Jr., Matthew, and Sarah. Chalo also leaves behind, 28 great-grandchildren; Roel, III, Kayla, Aliza, Billy III, Julian, Arianna, Jacob, Ciara, Anais, Soraya, Adelina, Victoria, Andrew, Victor, Noah, Zoe, Benjamin, Alfredo, III, Cristiano, Liam, Chole, Emma, Londyn, Isaiah, Gianna, Gabriel, Julianna and Alexei, and great-great grandson, Nicolas, Jr.
He also leaves behind his loyal companion and best "paw-son", Coco who brought him joy and comfort while never leaving his side.
Chalo will be remembered for his warm smile, generous heart and the steady guidance he offered to everyone who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, the example he set and the love he gave, will live on through the family he cherished so deeply.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, 11:00 a.m. from Holy Angels Cathedral 640 Tyler Street
