Grace Knox

Grace Knox passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 29, at the home of her niece in Metuchen. Grace was a lifelong resident of Metuchen, a town she loved. She lived in the Knox family homestead all her life until she was forced to leave because of illness. She was predeceased by her parents, Catherine and John Knox, her brothers James, William and Nicholas; and her sisters Loretta Collins and Mary Cotton. She was also predeceased by her nieces and nephews Beatrice Ohlson, Catherine Meyers, Beverly Conti, William Knox and Nicholas Cotton. She was a lifelong member of St. Francis Cathedral. Grace graduated from St. Peter's High School in 1933 where she was a member of the girl's basketball team. After high school she worked for M.H. Fishman in New Brunswick. After Fishman's was destroyed by a fire in the early Sixties, she worked for Macy's until her retirement. She was very active in the family-owned business, KNOX TAVERN, which was sold in 2003 after 64 years in business. Grace is survived by her nieces, Sheila Tynday and Catherine Cotton of Metuchen; Mary Jane Koperwhats and Elizabeth Piesen of Edison; Kathy Penvelope of Colonia and one nephew, Barry Cotton of Metuchen. She is also survived by many great, great nieces and nephews. Grace enjoyed life to the fullest and was an icon in Metuchen. She will always be remembered for her pink house, pink car, lavish Christmas decorations and outfits, and especially Guy Lombardo and New Year's Eve. She was forever young and always did it "her way." Her family would like to especially thank her caring and compassionate caretaker Ludy and faithful neighbor Tom Annarumma. A funeral service will be held Friday at 8:30am at Costello-Runyon Funeral Home (costello-runyon.com), 568 Middlesex Ave in Metuchen, followed by a 9am Funeral Mass at St. Francis Cathedral in Metuchen. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Metuchen. Visitation is Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9pm.
